Endless road construction to White River

White River, Ontario, Canada
Walls are paper thin but once we put in ear plug and shades for eyes we slept like babies till 7am. I let Richard sleep on while I showered and packed most of our things in the car. All the rain has passed the morning air is fresh, bit cool with frost on all the cars. Washed a bit of the dust away. Breakfast in the Communal Kitchen Cheerio's aren't our thing so we had our own muesli with the other breakfast items available. Found out all food in the fridge you pay for so tub yoghurt cost me $1.00 which I didn't mind, the toasted bagel gave me indigestion for the rest of the day.

Met some every lovely people at breakfast all travelling different parts of Canada. Loaded the esky paid for the yoghurt and found out missing pink jumper belonged to Owners sister-in-law, husband thought it belonged to someone else. Said our goodbyes and wished everyone safe journeys.

Headed east on Hwy17 to White River the view nearly all the way was Spruce trees lots of sections looked as though there had been a fire or dieback or lacking something. The road is quiet this morning only us and the semi trailers. Lots of road works on the highway all the way to Marathon. Bridge works at Beaver Creek to start off with and then a steady continuation with speed limits going from 90km down to 50km and stop lights at bridge constructions.

Needed petrol but the first place (Ulsala) the visa machine was down Richard was busting for the toilet used theirs. I was entertained watching young ferral couple dismantle their tent near the highway. Lots of bulrushes and ponds by the roadside and nearly all the towns on the lake side are First Nation they own a lot of land like our aboriginals.  Like yesterday the railway track weaves on either side of the highway and you see communication towers near the highway as well. The cyclists are far and few between saw a couple just past Beaver Post. Stopped at Lac Des Milles Lac for petrol $147.9 full service the Owners couldn't understand us. I don't think our accent is that difficult to understand. Asked if their pumps works seeing they were very corroded other people having breakfast said they were okay. Anyway the Owner looked like Snozzles the actor and he was very nice once he knew we weren't from Europe. Back on the road again and the cyclists had caught up with us.

Started our first section of straight roads to Thunder Bay turned off to Hwy 102 lots of homes off this highway on the Lake Superior side.    Passed many lakes saw a chap boat fishing on Mud Lake. Scenery now is very much like Jasper and Banff National Park.

Stopped at Thunder Bay (population of 109,000) for coffee break and stretch at the International Taiji Park on Lake Superior took some photos and video. Stocked up on more provisions at Walmart and had to take a photo of this upholstery shop is reminds us of Beryl and Ian. Just outside of Thunder Bay there is big construction work building a dual highway (two lanes each way) this went on for about 10kms and we travelled on the new section for some kms till it went back to single lanes at Eldorado Beach. Will have to update Jill because the GPS didn't recognise this. Noticed we had a maniac semi driver up behind us and we couldn't get away from him. Hold up on the highway due to an accident saw makes on the road and a truck and grader no one hurt. The police were directing the traffic this was before Bible Camp Road (thought of Julie and Bill).

The scenery now is homes around Lake Superior (this is a inland sea which has USA on the other side) fruit stands, little convenient shops, bait sold all on Hwy 11. Lots od turn offs to cabins, motels on the lake. The rock colour is now red very mountainous, spruce forests to continued from Red Rock and the maniac semi driver is back behind us. At Nipigon saw a lady with her disabled son from the English River Inn what a surprise.

Bach to road works again around Lake Superior right up to Gravel Lake where we saw our first policeman booking some poor person. The views near Rossport make you feel as though you are back in the Rockies. Passed through Schreiber on Lamont Lake missed taking a photo this is a lovely fishing town with cabins on the lake and lots of boats. Took a break at Terrace Bay still lots of roadworks stop lights at Little Pic Bridge (very high bridge over a lovely big river) an the highway was lined with bumble bee cones. All this contruction works put an extra hour on our travel time.

Passed Barrick amd Newmont gold mining sites (Ricahrd had shares in Newmont) these were 50kms before White River. Had a clear stretch now and arrived at White River Motel at 6pm very tired. Quickly made dinner raced to Reception for teatowel and extra pillow for Richard while he had a shower. enjoyed dinner with the Blueberries from Walmart.

Showered and started blog then Phyllis Skyped had a quick chat to her as I was trying to also book accommodation for tomorrow with no success. We both decided to hopefully gett something when we arrived at Massey some 550km away on Hwy 17. Travelled over 550kms today and very tired. Airconditioner is a little noisy so again thank god for earplugs.
