Sleep like a baby here with the sound of water flowing over the rocks into the pond where the otters are. Had a surprise this morning when I was checking emails for Brampton accommodation replies my mate Lisa Skyped us. Caught up on what is happening with our rentals seeing I talked Lisa into looking after them for us while we were away. Everything is running smoothly and I think she is enjoying doing it even though she is a very busy lady with her boys and working as a Teachers Aid (I think). Lisa will correct me if I am wrong. Only problem has been a water leak at Beachton which Don fixed but can't get rid of the mould smell in kitchen cupboards and drawers. Told Lisa to check on Internet for mould (I think it is Clove of oil to X amount of water and spray on) if I was home I have the solution there. Also asked Lisa to ring Rob to do the maintainence on the cupboards.
Exchanged emails with Bob and Linda about limited accommodation in Brampton only 1 vacational with kitchen and two hotels with mini fridge and microwave.
Enjoying the leisurely morning went over to the main office to phone Marg (no reply) and also to ring the Owner of a vacation rental in Brampton no reviews on Trip Advisor as they have only started last month plus no reply there either will ring both tonight. Paul said he would show us around the sights in Parry Sound when we were ready today.
Quickly made our lunch and we were ready for our tour. Terry (he does the maintenance here a lovely talkative South African) went with Paul and we followed in our car. Paul has a White Hummer which is bigger than the ones we have in Perth and he is a very big man.
This is a mystery tour nothing like going to the Waste Management first (they had rubbish to dump) drove through Parry Sound instead of road to Mall we went to the left passed beautiful big homes over 100 years old in Georgina Street to the Salt Docks.
Nearly 1000,000 tons of salt is shipped to this dock each spring for Goderich and Windsor. The salt is then used in the winter to clear ice and snow of Ontario's northern highways.
Next we went to Waubuno Beach named after the Waubuno steam-powered side-wheeler ship that sank in the channel and the 24 people on board were never found.
Paul is giving us a running commentary as we go to each spot.
Back in the car passed the Marina through town over one bridge then the Swing Bridge to Parry Island which belongs to the Wasauksing First Nation.
Here is where you buy tax free Havana cigars and cigarettes which Terry did seeing he is a chain smoker. Not sure what we are going to see we just followed Paul down a dirt gravel road to nowhere and came back. Paul said the sight posts to their Marina have been removed. The photo is blurred but the maples, pine and oak trees are beautiful. I thought when we stopped at the Indian cigar store Terry was getting directions but Richard said no so on another mystery drive.
Through the town again and onto Highway 400 in the direction of Toronto turn off at Hwy 141 got my map out to see where we were going. Passed through the small town of Humphrey at the turn off to Horseshoe Lake (looked at staying here but couldn't find any accommodations) passed Whittlefish Lake and Clear Lake where there are cabins, boats and fishing. Lots of homes along the road even saw a council worker repairing the road plus a dead raccoon. Don't know where Paul is taking us might be Rosseau which is the next town.
I was right stopped at this pretty town took photos on the way of places. Paul got some beer here apparently in Ontario you can only buy alcohol at LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario) they have the monopoly. Stopped at the Rosseau Waterfront Park on Lake Rosseau gets very busy on the weekend with the Farmers Market. On the other side of the lake Arnie, Stallion and some other actors have homes on the lake.
Next stop was where Paul lived as a child turned off on Nipissing Road the first road in Canada to the north built 1864 with huts then taverns built every 10 miles for people to stay each night. Hekkla was the first settlement. the dirt gravel road and scenery is just the same as on Parry Island but the road twists and turns a lot with lakes on the side near homes and small bridges. Looked at the first church built there in 1880 Christ Church of Cardwell.
The local people look after the church we signed the Visitors Book inside (Terry smokes too much or Paul won't let him smoke in the Hummer). Drove on some more to where Paul lived as a child on a 10 acre property back in 1945 there was on power or water only the dam near by.
The house was built in 1890 and Paul tried to buy it from the present Owner but she won't sell Paul is upset that the property is deteriorating he comes out a lot to check.
Don't know where we are going next passed the Star Lakes Cottages with cabins by the lake and people holidaying, still going over gravel roads with homes, lakes and trees either side. Came out on a main road to Carville on Hwy 518 passed some more lakes and saw familiar roads we first started on so I told Richard we must be going back to the motel which we did.
Was a enjoyable day even though we had our lunch on the run in the car as Richard drove. Was lovely to get back to have our coffee with a muffin. Thanked Terry and Paul for a lovely day. Checked emails and had a reply from Trip Advisor vacation rental "Big Bedroom" sent an invoice for payment which I wanted to query with Owner Krystyna Szyma (good name if you can pronounce it) but she wasn't in and her daughter/son couldn't answer my question. There are a few charges that are questionable and these should be made clear on her add on Trip Advisor. If she doesn't ring tonight will have to ring tomorrow morning before we leave. Also rang Marg but I think she hasn't put batteries in her hearing aids or hasn't turned the volume on the phone up. Left me hanging on the phone while she got her neighbour Peter to give me directions Marg couldn't hear me when I said we have a GPS. Peter's wife answered the phone and I explained everything to her but she just put the phone down while she explained to Marg and I could hear them having a conversation about other things. I tried yelling over the phone which made Julie run out to see what was going on. I gave up in frustration and hung up the phone.
Seeing we had a late lunch 3pm we celebrated our Wedding Anniversary by having bake beans on toast as we weren't hungry plus we were a bit tired from our mystery tour.
Showered and waiting for a call from Krystynait's 7pm when I noticed the phone wasn't plugged in but she also has my mobile number looks like I ring tomorrow. Will go on the Internet and look for places in Niagara Falls.
