Exploring Barry's Bay

Barry's Bay, Ontario, Canada
Another restful night in a dark quiet bedroom a lot of the apartments we have been in are either light, noise from outside or noisy clocks ticking. Left Sleepy Beauty in bed at 7.00am to go online to check emails and finish yesterdays blog document with the slow WIFI I don't go straight into Travelpod now as it freezes and I sometimes loose what I have typed. It is easier to cut and paste from a document than redo a blog.

Made coffee for the both of us and went back to bed and talked about what we might do today and where to stay for one night in Montreal. Some of the places I re-emailed to stay for one night don't go below three nights which is a pity.

We both enjoyed a leisurely breakfast I caught up with checking bank accounts and ticking off Canadian receipts on our Cash Passport MasterCard Account. Making sure everything balances with our expense spreadsheet and how much money we have spent and keep on track with our budget.

Time slipped away and it was 10.00am I made lunch and a flask of coffee Richard found a place we can see tomorrow on the way to Ottawa a slight detour off Hwy 60 at Eganville to Fourth Chute and the Bonnechere Caves. Will need to check their website for times of the cave tours.

Took the Barry's Bay Cottage folder with the sights to see in and around the town parked in the center of the town in the Metro Market Carpark. Firstly Barry's Bay is known as the Polish Capital of Canada situated in the heart of the Madawaska valley on the historic Opeongo Line and was originally a lumber town on Lake Kamaniskeg. Today this Irish/Polish community is a hub of tourism and government within the region quite a busy town.

First we stopped at Zurakowski Park this historical park honours local polish resident and world-renowned test pilot Janusz Zurakowski who flew spitfighters for the Polish Air Force/British Air Force in WW11 Battle of Britain. A highly decorated Officer and test piloted the Canadian supersonic interceptor known as the CF-105 Avro Arrow. He had a very interesting life and died at the age of 90.

Walked a couple of doors up to Grumblin' Granny's a weird shop of anything and everything one can get lost in here. Took photos and videos as we went along crossed over the road to the old Railway Station which is now the Information Centre. This is one of the few original railway stations left in Ontario was built in 1894 up until the 1930's the rail line was the main transportation route between Montreal and Toronto carrying lumber, wheat, soldiers, liquor and passengers. It closed in the late 1960's.
Down the road is one of only two remaining authentic wooden water towers in Ontario. In its glory days of steam engines it was right next to the Railway Station. The outdoor museum also showcases railway and historical farm equipment which is rusting away. Over the road from the Railway Station is the original Railway Hotel now the Balmoral Hotel and it is for sale if you want to buy it.

Feeling hungry now went to the Baykery and Diary Freeze & Grill for an ice-cream but didn't have enough cash need to go to an ATM so being strong willed we went over the road to the Metro bought some potato salad for dinner bread and sliced ham for lunches. Drove down to to the Wharf and had lunch still a bit cool. The first wharf dated back to 1904 but this one is a floating pontoon for small boats and there is a boat slip next to it. Another beautiful lake/river drove over the Causeway (originally built of timber but now land) to Mask Island originally known as Welshman's Island owned by Edward Williams from Wales then purchased by Paul Mask. Nice drive with cabins and homes dotted on the edge of the water round the island.

Drove back to St. Hedwig's Catholic Church on top of the hill overlooking the lake where we had lunch and met a lady from Ottawa who is moving to Barry's Bay to retire with her husband. It is amazing how many people have either married kids or relatives in Australia. This is a beautiful church.

The lady gave us directions to Biernacki Mountain Road to the lookout to view the area all around Barry's Bay but couldn't find it so we decided to go back to the cabin. We had enough of touring today time for a rest and of course check for emails, download Bodhi for Richard to check the stock market and his Ezy charts.

As it was such a lovely afternoon we took advantaged of the weather to give the car a good clean inside and out with what there was at the cabin ready for Ottawa it is amazing how much dust gets in/on a car and little pebbles on the floors.

Richard went for a walk on the trail by the lake while I was online when he came back we had afternoon tea.   I took a video and photos of our resort then started cooking dinner. After dinner showered and relaxed in front of TV watched Iron Man 2 before going to bed.
