Quebec City, Quebec, Canada
Both of us couldn't get off to sleep last night Richard did an update of iCloud on his ipad and now the screen is different. Thought I had to do an email to Steve for him as he forgot which password he used for iCloud. The grey cloud shifted and Richard remembered so now he can use his ipad. Wasn't till about midnight that we finally died and went into a deep sleep. I woke up at my usual time of 6.00am and now that I am up to date with my blog documents I started downloading them into Travelpod and published all of them. The photos I will download and include at a later date at least now everyone will know what we have been up to.

As I was trying to do the download John Skyped and Phyllis let me know I had an account to pay. John is scanning and emailing them to me. Sad news that Barry is getting worse and had mini strokes when he was having an MRI. The dementia is really setting in now. Let them know what we are up to and where we are heading.

Richard is stirring now so I put the jug on and we had coffee in bed (it is our ritual in the morning).
Today we move upstairs for one night so I showered first and while Richard had a showered I packed up and took everything up except the esky, which Richard did once I emptied the fridge. The stairs are a bit steep for me plus the esky is a little heavy.

Time was slipping by and we didn't have breakfast till after 9.00am when I was meant to met Gilles to pay $90 cash for tonight. I wonder how many cash deals he does it works well with us $20 in our pocket can go to another night somewhere else. Backpack was all ready to go with our lunch at least now being in this apartment we are across from Gilles and his french speaking partner and we don't have to stand outside ring their bell all day.

Gave his partner the money and she said Gilles will see us in 10 minutes well that turned out longer and I knocked on their door because we wanted to go to the Citadelle next to the old city of Quebec. Well I tell you Gilles can talk I thought we would never leave. He has been everywhere and done nearly everything from mining underground, creating software programs, real estate, stock market you name it he has done it. He wants to look at Richards charting to see if he can design something. He owns all around him including the car park next door over the road from the apartment. You pay cash there as well.

Last night he showed me where the ATM and bank is so when we come back from the Citadelle we will get some more money only have $20.00. Today is a beautiful day the sun is shining and we are going to have a relaxing day enjoying the Citadelle. Walked up Honore Mercier to Rue Saint Jean to the first arch entry looked at the armory then walked up the stairs onto the fortified wall of the old city and followed it to the Citadelle.

Sat on the outer wall looking at Parc des Champs-de-Bataille this area I think is part of the Plains of Abraham where General Wolf (English) and General Montcalm (French) went into battle in 1759 both died that day and the English won.

The Citadelle was constructed in 1820 (30 years to do) by the English to stop the Americans, French and any other enemy from invading it is located on Cap Diamont and constitutes the eastern flank of Quebec's fortifications and is known as the Gibraltar of America.    Its star shaped layout is characteristic of Vauban fortifications. One would have to be pretty good to get in there. The outside wall has a mound against it so a cannon cannot penetrate then there is like a moat with another stone wall and cannons on top. It is pretty impressive.

Sat on a bench looking over the River Lawrence as we had our morning tea watching the herd of tour buses coming and going. It is so nice not to be one of them and just sit here watching the world go by and not be in a mad hurry to take photos and videos in the allotted time you are given. Went over to the Pavilion for shade and listened to one of the Tour Guides explaining about the battle between the French and the English.

Walked down the Boardwalk next to the Citadelle to nearly the front of Chateau Frontenac and had lunch at one of the Pavilions overlooking the River Lawrence before we climbed up the hill path to the fortified walls of the Citadelle to the entry.

We went through the first wall and the second to look inside too late for the English speaking tour and we weren't going to wait an hour for the next. The Royal 22nd Regiment is still stationed there today and military ceremonies are held during summer.

Nice gentle walk down the hill to Avenue Honore Mercier in the center of the avenue across from the Parliament Building stands the Tourny Fountain very impressive took lots of photos and videos as we went around.   We were very lucky and missed all the tourist buses as we walked around the Citadelle.

Couldn't find the ATM will look tomorrow but we saw a little supermarket and bought chicken drumsticks for dinner, bread milk and eggs. Made it back to the apartment by 3.00pm in time for afternoon tea with the Camembert Cheese we bought on Island of Orleans on toast little squares (no biscuits left). Saw Gilles partner and was able to do our washing in the vacant apartment near us. So now we are right for the road all nice and clean.

Richard had a sleep while I did the washing caught up with downloading entries in Travelpod plus photos for yesterday. Richard caught up with Gilles who showed him how to operate the TV and DVD so he could watch some tonight.

Had fun trying to work out the Grill on the oven (boy do I like French) but we got there in the end and finally had dinner at 7.00pm with pineapple, strawberries and yoghurt. We live well here. Richard wanted a bath but the silly push down plug didn't work so he had to have a shower instead. That was interesting too you have to figure out how to use the plumbing at each apartment you go to. Here you have a silly shower curtain around the shower head. You feel a prisoner in the bath tub.

Finished today’s blog while Richard was watching DVD's and I listened in too. 9.30pm bedtime and tomorrow morning I will go online to look for the next place to stay.
