Restless couldn't sleep well last night worrying like Mother Dear of not having a reply from Patty's Beach Chalets in Janeville just passed Bathurst. Just before 6.00am I got up and went online to check the emails and still no reply from Patty's Beach Chalets went on Trip Advisor to see if Johns Motel still had a Suite with kitchen but the last one had been taken (there were four left last night). At 8.30am I will ring Patty as her website calendar for October is vacant and we should be okay for three nights.
While I was on the laptop I downloaded the blog and photos into Travelpod I don't trust the WIFI connections now at the chalets we stay at the bands are very weak and I loose my entries if I do them straight on Travelpod. At least with doing a word document it is saved and I don't have to retype or remember what we have been up to for the day.
It's 7.00am Richard is stirring I make our usually coffee and we talk over not having the booking but I think pnce I ring we should be okay. Told Richard he had a reply from Nick about fishing and the bad weather in Perth. Time to get up and moving Richard had the first shower while I did our lunch and coffee started packing the boot of the Pontica then had my shower.
Enjoyed our last breakfast on the porch looking out over the Saint Lawrence River. We are both having trouble with the Internet connection same as the French couple in No. 14 so I went to Reception like yesterday and the lady rebooted the Router. Still no email it's 8.30am and the car is packed I called Patty but had to leave a message so we are still in the dark of not knowing if we have a booking or not.
Richard keyed the address in the GPS and we will still go to Rimouski first then onto Bathurst in New Brunswick. Jill was sending us in some round about way through the township of Riviere-du-Loup I told Richard to turn the GPS off and go the way we went yeasterday but he wanted to follow Jill. Well that was a disaster because Jill picks the shortest route to a destination so instead of going on Hwy 132 we went in a different direction to Hwy 185 down the middle to New Brunswick not the coastline of Saint Lawrence to Rimouski.
Lucky I was looking at the map and noticed we passed St-Antonin first town passed Riviere-du-Loup Richard pulled over and keyed in Trois-Pistoles on Hwy 132 to Rimouski and we turned back in the direction of St-Antonin turned off at 193 to Hwy20E at St-Antonin. We skirted round the outer limits of Riviere-du-Loup and the farmland till we were back on the road we were on yesterday. Now we are on track to Rimouski passing farmland with silos turned at Cacouna to 191 then onto Hwy20E passing the Autumn sugar maple and white birch forests and there is no dual highway now. The first one we have come across back to the cones at bridge turn off Hwy132E at Ile Verte to Rimouski.
Poor Jill is having a slight meltdown doesn't know which way to go because we change directions and the GPS has to recalculate the new route to take.
At the moment we are travelling up the coast with views of the Saint Lawrence on our left old homes, barns on right which look out over the river and have maple trees covering the hills behind. At the moment the tide is out. At Trois-Pistoles we start climbing and the river is lower than the town which is a similar size to Riviere-du-Loup with the usual tourist accommodations with river views. Can see lots of big boats carrying freight up the river to Quebec and lovely views overlooking farmland and forest to the river.
One funny sight we saw was a tow truck with a little shed on the back towing a caravan near St. Simon a small town where the houses are a couple of metres from the road like on the Island of Orleans. Back to looking at rolling hills covered in forest and farmland the traffic is quite light at the moment with a few semi's. Richard was in dreamland and we missed the scenic road to Rimouski went the highway instead.
Found the Information Centre and lucky there was a young lass who spoke English got some brochures of the area she gave us a Parking Ticket so we could walk around the town without payinf for a ticket. First stop was a hot chocolate muffin for me and danish for Richard at Tim Horton's by the river. When the French shop assistant's know we are from Australia they love to
practise their limited english on us and listen to our acsent.
Walked up and down the river boardwalk took some photos then walked around the town before heading out to Pointe-au-Pere for lunch and to look at the submarine at the Historial Maritime Museum. We were lucky enough to see two military helicopters take off near the submarine. Tourist attraction here with the Onondaga submarine, the 33m lighthouse with Keepers Cottage and other old buildings plus Museum where you hear the stories and memories of people who lost their lives on 29 May 1914 on the Empress of Ireland.
Before heading off we stopped at the Shell Petrol Station $134.4 filled the tank and cleaned the windows. Continued driving along Hwy132E by the river turned at Mont-Joli back onto Hwy20E with the veiws of forest and farmlands plus for the time being we have the road to ourselves. With climbing higher in the hills or mountains we have to keep popping out ears. The highway has just been resurfaced from St. Moise turn off for about the next 10kms before Hwy 297 and now there are lots of semi's going the other way.
At Sayabec is Lac (Lake) Matapedia we travel by it all the way to Amqui and this is where a tractor held up the traffic. There was a Suzuki in front of us and he wasn't waiting for anyone the idiot pulled out over double lines and overtook all the cars and tractor. Many silo's and industry in this town. It has got to the stage now where every town starts looking the same including the churches and golf courses.
The Fall of the autumn leaves changing colours on the mountains and hills are beautiful paasing Lake Samon now and Hwy132E follows Riviere Matapedia all the way to the border of New Brunswick where we cross over Riviere Patapedia. There are now lots of RV's coming in the other direction and some caravans are up in front of us. Passed a very large lumber yard at Causapscal and just passed there we pulled over at a lookout for afternoon tea of cake and coffee.
It was a nice peaceful place till the mad Suzuki driver drove in with his radio blairing. Took some photos of the covered road bridge over the river plus a video and then moved on it is now getting late.
The coutryside now looks very much like the Rockies with the highway going through the mountains with the river and railway line winding through the valley bottom. At Matapedia we crossed the river and send goodbye to Quebec Province and hello to New Brunswick and English signs. Following the Patapedia River till 397 exit round the Baie Des (Bay of) Chaleurs where we had our first set of lights for roadworks on road with lake on both sides. On ocassions saw four sets of high voltage power lines popping up through the forest passed over six rivers took exit 311 to Hwy15 taking us to Campbellton.
Poor Jill tried to bypass Campbellton by taking us on some small road (Flatland Road) but we followed the signs going through Tide Head and Atholville to Campbellton till we found the Information Centre near the river. Very helpful lady there (speaks English) gave me a pile of books on all of New Brunswick plus she let us know we have gained one hour. So it is 5.00pm and the Mall next door didn't have a Supermarket went over the road to Sobeys bought a cooked chicken, potato salad for a quick dinner and other supplies for the next few days at the chalet as it it 8kms out of town.
Being tired we missed a couple of turns but managed to get back on Hwy 11 to Janeville the road is very patchy needs resurfacing. There are homes on both sides with maple trees in between till we finally reached Patty's Beach Chalets. Lovely log cabins on the Bay it's 7.00pm and Patty with her husband Dennis were having a BBQ and waiting for us.
I signed in while Richard unloaded the car and with Patty's help we put everything in the cabin or chalet which overlooks the bay. Patty showed us how everything works in the chalet before she left us to have dinner. The chalet has everything, no problems with using anything and it has a shower recess with taps and shower rose that work without drowning you.
A quick meal of chicken, potato salad ith salad followed by strawberries, bananas and yoghurt. I downloaded today's photos put some on the blog entered receipts in Expenses preadsheet watched some TV after my shower. Richard couldn't get the Internet on his ipad so he went on the laptop while I watched TV and went to sleep. Too tired to do the blog both of us went to bed and died.
