I wish all vacation rental Owners stayed or slept in one of their rentals to know what a good nights sleep does for a visitor. To wake up with no aches and pains from a cheap bed is wonderful you have a good start for the day. Early start for me as I can concentrate better in the morning doing the blog with no distractions from Richard or the TV.
Richard stirred around 7.30am I was finished with writing the blog so I made us coffee before breakfast and a showered. The people in the adjoining cottage were already up can hear the noise from their bathroom (Shower). We were thinking of staying an extra night here but with the views of both sides of the island being similar we thought an extra night in Hopewell Cape in New Brunswick would be better for seeing extra sights. Sent an email to Owner of Artisan Suites requesting an extra night so we will wait and see if we can before I start booking in Nova Scotia.
Today we thought we would go and explore the Capitol of PEI Charlottetown and sample the famous seafood seeing the island is developing a global reputation as a premier destination for food lovers.
Took Route 6 the scenic drive through the rolling hills of farmland, grazing cattle and diary cows crossed over two bridges with gorgeous views of North Rustico Bay at Cymbria. Our cottage is a couple of coves away round the bend the water here must be good as in nearly every cove or bay including ours there are oyster beds.
Lots of wildlife (birds) as we passed many wetlands and lakes on the island can see these at Brackley Beach where we are heading to the point to view the ocean. It's very winding at Brackley Point must be good there is a tourist bus here. The strong wind reminds me of being at Albany up on the lookout hill got blown away from there. Well I must say our beaches including Wedge Island look a lot better than here we have beautiful white sand here it is grey looking and the water is a dirty brown quite rough today with the wind. No good for surfing. Continued up to Dalvay and the view was the same as Brackley Point so didn't bother taking a video or photos. Passed some wetlands and lakes on the way plus drove round the impressive Dalvay Golf Course Resort overlooking Dalvay Lake.
Saw more mussel farms at Winter Lake passed many chalets, cottages, B&B's and motels all over the island a real tourist place with its rich soil to grow mainly potatoes by the looks of it plus blueberries, strawberries, corn and other products plus raise cattle for meat and diary cows.
Being a small island it doesn't take long to reach the outer suburbs of Charlottetown pulled over for Richard to key in a destination at the Waterfront near the Information Centre for self guide tours which the lady noted we already had. Seeing there is metered parking we followed the lady's advice and parked across the road in Water Street where it was free in front of some homes. Met a lovely Lebanese man from Lebanon sitting on his porch who knew a lot about Australia but we had to get away because he just wanted to talk all day.
Followed the walking guide on the map when a young lass thought we were lost and mentioned some good eating places for seafood. Richard was picking up chestnuts from the ground under the big chestnut tree and the lass told Richard which ones were good and how to cook them.
Followed the map to Great George Street looked at St Dunstan's Basilica and then Province House which is under restoration at the moment. Province House has long been regarded as the birthplace of Confederation. Here in September 1864 23 Political Leaders from the British colonies of PEI, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Canada began the discussion that led in 1867 to the creation of the dominion of Canada. Was very interesting reading as we walked through the original House of assembly and the Legislative Council.
Looked at a few more buildings but the hunger pains set in so we scrolled through the PEI Restaurant Guide to find a suitable place to eat but the lunch menu's were only sandwiches or burgers no seafood platters. This we would have to wait and have in the evening. Passed quite a few places but they didn't look to attractive and not many people inside and the ones we did want to go to were closed. Decided on Merchant Man bad mistake this is a pub we shared the Chilli Mussels, Richard had Haddock and chips I had Seafood Chowder. For $45.00 including tip we would have had a better meal at Don's down at Hillarys it was only pub food Richard said the fish was tasteless and my chowder had more potato than seafood.
Walked down to the harbour to Cows Creamery for an ice cream (voted best is Canada) but didn't think much of it too sweet like it had a lot of fudge. Had a better one on the way to Niagara Falls, god we are wingers.
We were told Victoria by the Seaside was meant to be a lovely restored little town so we drove over there only to have roadworks on Route 1 from Eric's Crossing (Clyde River to Desable) building a new dual lane highway. On top of that we were stuck behind a Harvester to where we had to turn off to Victoria by the Seaside. Impatient drivers were tooting us and overtaking on the
double white lines.
Well the little town was nothing special had our afternoon tea at the wharf walked around the block looking at the buildings the Little Chocolate Shop was very expensive took a photo of the largest tree on PEI and then drove back to the Cottage. The route Jill chose was the same as what I did on the map Route 1 to Route 13 had a detour because a bridge was out passed what
looked like a Ski Lift at Brickvale Provincial Park then drove through a spruce plantation then back to the rolling farm fields where we came through yesterday to Hunt River and Blue Crest
Cottages.
I was feeling to well the Seafood Chowder didn't agree with me so unfortunately I spent some time in the bathroom till I was better. After a hot drink I was right again Richard was relaxing with his ipad before getting some more DVD's I sent an email to Terry's son David in Nova Scotia saying when we were coming and some suggestions on sights to see.
Seeing we were not hungry we just had bake beans on toast with sliced pineapple. I caught up with downloading the photos on Travelpod only have one day in Quebec to do and I will be all up to date. Watched one of Richards DVD's with him got the pulse rate moving before bed. Checked Skype and John wasn't online and it was late after 10.00pm so bedtime for us.
