Walking the ocean floor

Hopewell Cape, New Brunswick, Canada
Slept in this morning and woke up to the sound of rain Richard made our filtered coffee and we had it in bed watching the news and weather on TV. Bad news is we will be having rain for the next few days hopefully we might be ahead of it when we travel to Cape Breton Island of Nova Scotia. Looked out the window at 8.00am and it is still raining not heavy just a drizzle but annoying because we wanted to go and walk on the ocean floor at Hopewell Rocks this morning at 9.00am till 12.40pm when the tide comes back in. Our two day pass ends today and we leave tomorrow for Pictou on Nova Scotia NOT HAPPY JAN!!

Has a shower to brighten up then breakfast but the clouds are grey and the drizzle is not letting up. Looks as though it is a day inside Richard is on his ipad checking car adverts and prices on the Canadian Internet site Craigs List (like our Ebay). We will need to put an advert in now to sell the Pontiac before 1st November when we leave Halifax. I went online to start finding a cottage on Cape Breton Island for four nights when I noticed Joy and Phil were online so we Skyped them and had a good old chin-wag. Nice to catch up with them as we haven't spoken for some time. Speaking of time it was nearly 10.00am and the weather was clearing so we decided to bite the bullet and go to Hopewell Rock put on our Poncho's and walk the ocean floor.

Well for a wet day there were lots of cars, RV's and three School Buses in the car park at Hopewell Rocks. Still a slight drizzle so on with the poncho's and a brisk walk to Flower Pot Rock where we descend down a large flight of stairs to the ocean floor. Thank god the high school kids had gone we passed them walking down the trail to Flower Pot Rocks. Lots of people walking round on the rocky gravel ocean floor not much seaweed on the ground only on the base of the rock formations. It is a beautiful eery feeling walking where water will be in another couple of hours. The weather has now cleared and the sun is out which is good as the poncho is a bit annoying when you are trying to take photos.

At low tide you have six hours to walk on the ocean floor in the shadow of the flowerpot shaped rock formations. Then as the tide gently shifts experience the wonder of nature as 100 billion tones of salt water slowly fills the Bay of Fundy. Tides are the height of a four storey building and there is one and a half kms of coast lined with the uniquely shaped flowerpot rock formations.

Everyone takes photos of the famous Flower Pot Rocks as this is the sight advertised in all the travel brochures and of course we had are photo taken there too. Walked from one end to the other in the allocated time as there are Park Rangers also down on the ocean floor making sure everyone leaves in time and don't get caught when the tide comes in. A lot of areas close to the cliff shoreline caves and crevices are permanently roped off with danger signs on.

Cleaned our shoes and decided with the time we have we can make it to see the Tidal Bore (wave) a scenic phenomenon caused by the Bay of Fundy tides, the Bore occurs twice daily. The higher waters in the bay cause the water in the placid Petitcodiac River to roll back upstream in one wave, which can range in height from 3 to 60cm. At low tide the muddy river bottom is often visible but within one hour of arrival of the Bore the water level rises some 7.5m to fill the river to its bank.

Well naught us went to Hillsborough Valufoods first (my bribery to Richard to go to the tidal Bore) to get some snacks and then we filled the Pontiac $123.9 got directions to the bridge and Bore Park because I forgot my map and Richard the GPS. We had to go all the way back to Moncton turned into the Police Station by mistake and the old officer saw the confused look on our faces and told us to park next door as that is where we can see the Tidal Bore.

Parked the car got our lunch to eat and wait for the Bore which was to happen just before 1.00pm when we saw two surfers with their surfboards and people starting to leave. You wouldn't believe it but we missed the Tidal Bore by a couple of minutes the bloody wave and surfers came through at 12.45pm. What a wasted trip if we had not have stopped at the petrol station and shop we would have seen the wave but it wasn't meant to be.

We had a lovely drive back stopped at Hillsborough at The Pharmacy for a second opinion on my eye from the Pharmacist but she was useless wasn't interested in my eye couldn't be bothered looking closely. Drove to the cottage and enjoyed a cup of filtered coffee with peanut butter on toast for a snack. Dr Richard looked on his ipad and I definitely had a sty later he watched a bit of TV relaxed and then drifted off to sleep for a while. Little me started getting frustrated trying to find a cottage around Baddeck in the central area on Cape Breton Island and it is a bit hard because this long weekend is Thanks Giving and everyone is going away for the three days. Time is running out and Wendy let me use her phone to ring a couple of Cottages lucky enough one had a vacancy for the four days we wanted and me being so nice got a discount (no tax) if we paid cash. I love the word cash you can get so much with that word so now we are right for the next five days. Will book the rest of Nova Scotia in the next few days when we decide which way we are going plus people we have met have given us places to see and stay.

Not being hungry I zapped the chicken and rice in the microwave with some veggies and that was dinner. Tonight is the last night to relax in the Jacuzzi with the lovely bubbles and giggles while we try to sink each other. I got the blog and photos downloaded and watched DVD's before going to sleep I hope the next place has a lovely bed like this one. The cottage is very homey with views of the Petitcodiac River plus Wendy loves having us as guests she enjoys listening to us talk and where we have been across Canada.
