Close encounters with Mahone Bay

Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada
Another day in paradise the moon was glowing red through the clouds above Lunenburg a sight never to see again very beautiful. The temperature was below 4 this morning had rained overnight turned the heating on late this morning 6.20am sleeping in a lot now seeing we are on the downhill slide of our holiday. Both up at 7.30am to make the filtered coffee together and back to bed till 8.00am.

Very late start this morning as Mahone Bay is only about a 10 minute drive from Lunenburg both on our computers checking different things and up dating receipts and paying accounts nice to be up to date with everything and relax with no worries of where to stay or what to see. Lunch and flask ready decided not to turn Jill on till we were on Hwy3 the Lighthouse Scenic Route to Mahone Bay because she will tell us to take the shortest route which is Hwy 324 no good.

Since we have arrived we have been trying to see Mary the Motel Manager we were told by the lady at the Tourist Info Centre her father-in-law passed away the day we arrived so each day we stop at the office only to see the “closed” sign. Followed the Lunenburg map to Hwy 3 with no problems turned Jill on and we were right for the road. Well all the roads around here have lovely patch work all in need of being resurfaced.

We see a turn off to Hermans Island so decide to have a look down the winding bumpy road through the normal Acadian forest we are used to now and the homes dotted in between. Went over a bridge to the island passed sea marshlands, lakes down to Lunenburg Yacht Club usual harbour sight with homes near by and on the shoreline always a beautiful peacefully view to look at one we ill miss when we leave. Back out the same road over another bridge to Maders Cove hugging the shoreline of Mahone Bay would hate to rive here in a storm the water would be lapping over the road.

Magnificent views of Maders Cove stopped at a “no parking bay” between the bay and sea marshlands, lakes to take a photo of the tiny island with lighthouse beacon on and another slightly bigger island with house on owned by a Swiss family. A local drove by twice to see what we were doing and we waved, he smiled and was satisfied we were okay. Lots of inlets, homes on shoreline, lakes and forest before we arrive at Mahone Bay “a treasure since 1754” and named one of Canada's best small town downtowns by Harrowsmith Country Life Magazines. I can understand why it is “pretty as a picture” went into overdrive again with the camera's and I didn't bring another memory stick for the video camera. So when we come through tomorrow I will finish off a video of the three churches in a row.

These three churches are a tourist attraction (St James Anglican, St John's Lutheran and Trinity United) and all compete against each other to increase their flock this is what a lovely lady told us at Tim Horton's. We had parked the car over the road from the three churches (for sale signs showing) before warming up and having morning tea at Tim Horton's. Must be pensioners day we managed to get the last table and chair next to the lady who gave us some history on the town. She was born in Maders Cove and lives where we took photos of the little lighthouse beacon.

Lovely old town with beautiful buildings walked up and down both sides of the main street met some lovely people, looked in the shops and even bought a little wooden lighthouse to add to my dolls collection at home and also memories of all the lighthouses we have seen on our travels. Had lunch in the car the wind is bloody cold goes right through you before we headed back to Lunenburg.

Let Jill take us back on the short route Hwy 324 quick drive passed cattle grazing, homes and the forest. Drove into Lunenburg to find the Knots Pub going there for supper as the Canadians say and it is a tiny wooden building no wonder we missed it all the time it is right on the bend where all the streets meet. Proceeded down the one way street (Lincoln St) to Kemp Street where we had a look at the houses with the Lunenburg bump (different styles that jut out) the camera went into overdrive again and then we decided we had had enough and went back to the motel. When we pulled up we were lucky enough to get photos of the Mother deer and one of her babies I think they live on he property next door to the motel. Might be lucky and get photos of all three later at dusk when they graze on the lawn outside our balcony.

Finally met Mary and will catch up with her tomorrow to pay our bill Richard got some more filtered coffee and soap so we are right for another day. Checked the Kijiji site sent an email to a couple in Dartmouth who run a B&B plus the husband owns a used car yard. Got their details from a lady we met while staying at the Old Entrance B 'n B Cabins in Hinton outside of Banff (remember the bikie ladies I mentioned). Hopefully they can help us with selling the Pontiac or Terry buys is at a fair price to us. Richard had a little rest while I downloaded today’s photos and did the blog. Went inside and it is just like an English pub all natural wooden walls decorated with barrels, bottles, plaques, pictures and other odds and ends checked out the Menu for what we will eat tonight.

5.30pm and time to leave for Knots Pub if we had of left any later we would have been waiting like other people there. The little pub is very popular and packed we managed to get the last small tall table with high bench chair good view of the pub and very comfy. Enjoyed our Seafood Chowder (not as good as Digby) main course of Scallops, Caesar Salad and Chips ($65.00 with tip). Young couple next to us heard our Aussie accent and asked which part of Australia we were from as his brother just bought a house near the beach somewhere near Edgewater. His brother is a WIFI up north on the mines and he works on the Scallop Boats showed us a video on his iphone very scary looks like the show we watch on SBS. Plus we might be in luck his mechanic friend buys and sells car so hopefully for a good price he will buy the Pontiac in Dartmouth. Will know tomorrow if we have an email before we leave at 10.00am for Peggy's Cove.

Nice and full now and relaxing watching Sherlock Holmes then bed.
