Brass monkey weather at Prospect and Terence Bay

Indian Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada
May have slept well last night but we both woke up with sore backs from the hard bed like sleeping on the floor. Made the filtered coffee did it wrong should have been only one cup pot each machine is different. Coffee too weak so Richard made the next ones which we had in bed. The bathroom is the only room without a heater so one is very quick in there.

With the cramped space we managed showers and making lunch had a laugh the only place we could boil the jug was on the floor that is where the extension power points are. Between the bathroom basin and little table we accomplished everything. Checked emails still no response for car Richard is getting desperate I changed the adverts on Kijiji so we will wait till we get to Dartmouth tomorrow to get in the full swing of selling the car.

Today we are going to Prospect and Terence Bay which is on the way to Halifax and we will be too rushed to sight see tomorrow plus they said it is going to rain. It always rains when we leave to go to another town. Outside is very cold the wind is a killer had a walk around the outside of the motel to the granite shoreline tide is out. The motel is in a little protected inlet the Owner has a boat shed and small wharf with quite a few roped fishing lines and other fishing gear on the wharf. On the other side of the inlet is another boat shed on stills over the water don't know if they moor their fishing boats here.

All rugged up heater on in the car and we are on Hwy 3 the Lighthouse Route going past Peggy's Cove, the lakes, sea marshlands to Prospect a small authentic fishing community. The landscape around Peggy's Cove is quite different to anywhere else for miles you see the granite rocks, sea marshlands with the red salt bushes, small spruce trees and lakes. Once past Peggy's cove the scenery changes to the sugar maples and spruce forest but the autumn leaves have fallen off plus sections of spruce has the spruce bug disease killing the trees and the marsh bog doesn't help the spruce trees either.

There were many homes, cottages, cabins, rivers, lakes through the forest and the road was close to many inlets with little fishing communities all around the rocky granite coastline. West Dover was a very picturesque fishing community on a very big inlet of the bay. The last lake we saw was at Big Lake with a lodge overlooking the lake and then there was only forest with small glimpses of inlets till we reached Blind Lake (I love the names to some of these villages).

Bayside is another very picturesque fishing community on one side of the bay and over the bridge is Shad Cove beautiful granite coastline lots of little jetties and moorings with boats anchored in the sheltered inlets. Pity our coastlines didn't have all these inlets which are natural little harbours for all the fishing communities here. But one annoying thing is you cannot drive to the waters edge as it is private land making it difficult to take photos of the beautiful coastline. All the little villages melt into one another along the highway. At Whites Lake we turned right to Prospect driving through the bare maple and spruce forests, marshlands and homes by the road till we reached Prospect.

Stopped on the hillside to view the town in the distance took a photo it looks like a village out of the movies church in the middle lots of coloured homes many rocky islands in the bay with little sheltered harbours at each inlet. Drove right out to the point got blown away and nearly froze while taking photos.   Such barren land but the sea marshlands with the red salt bushes and spruce look so beautiful with the rocky granite coastline we see everywhere.

Back to Hwy 3 onto Terence Bay the scenery is very much the same it is another fishing community on the way were two homes with way out Halloween decoration had to stop and take a photo.   Passed quite a few fishing harbours can see all the lobster pots ready for the season stopped at one for morning tea lovely view of inlets on both sides of the road. Went back to the middle of the village to the other side of the bay to the S.S. Atlantic Heritage Park. Tragedy befell on the shores off Mar's Head, Lower Prospect in the early hours of 1 April 1873 562 souls were lost when the S.S. Atlantic smashed into the rocky unforgiving coast in the worst nautical disaster in Canada prior to the Titanic. The S.S. Atlantic was only two years old and one of the largest and most luxurious liners of the day.

Met a lovely local couple at the Interpretation Centre who told us the history of the disaster before we froze our butts of the see the monument, graves and where the ship sank on the rocky coastline. Again we races back to the car to warm up and found a spot to have lunch before driving back to the motel.

No rest spots, shops or petrol stations so we had to wait till we were back at the motel to have a twinkle. Supplies are low and we need some fruit for Richard to snack on before tomorrow so I asked the Owner where the closest shop was and we virtually had to go all the way back to Upper Tantallon on Hwy 333 to the SuperStore 28kms away. You wouldn't want tot forget the milk as it is a long drive from Indian Harbour or any of the little villages. We didn't see a grocery shop or petrol station after Upper Tantallon to Terence Cove and that is a distance to travel.

Too cold for anymore sightseeing packed what I could in the little fridge and the rest in the esky we bought a cooked chicken for dinner tonight with some apples. Time to relax and catchup with the photo downloads, blog and emails. The owner has been to replace the towels but she turned the heater off and the unit was bloody cold had to put our jumpers on and jump under the covers
to warm up till the heater warmed the unit.

I am sorry to say this motel is make us very homesick and we have now started the countdown for when we go home six days to be precise. We are turning into Grumpy old people we miss our bathroom shower, our comfy bed and food that isn't just flavoured with pepper and salt. Richard is tired of driving and I am tired of taking photos, blogs (sorry!!), doing our expenses and trying to have interesting food flavoured with pepper and salt.

Time to relax on the bed watch TV and sleep.
