Snug as a bug and slept in till 7.30am looked out the window and there was ice on the roof of the buildings next to the hotel. Had our early morning coffee fix to get the body working before having a quick shower and wash my hair so Richard could take over the bathroom.
Jumped on the laptop to do the usual email checks no response for the advert and Richard checked his ipad when Phyllis Skyped us. Caught up with the local gossip and the next time we see each other will be at the Perth Domestic Airport.
Time for breakfast the stomach is starting to rumble nearly 8.30am no sausages, bacon instead this morning and thankfully it is not crisp like the Americans have it. Very naughty took took some butter, jam, yoghurt and muffins for later on.
Back up in our room we decided to take the Pontiac to O'Regan's Used Cars seeing we were no getting any response from the adverts. Raced down to the car to get the folder with their phone number and the car looked like it had been in the freezer it had ice all over it. Borrowed a scraper from Reception for the windows. Richard and I had a good laugh about the ice while I made lunch and a flask of coffee. Richard phoned the Manager Anthony to say we would bring the Pontiac over tomorrow afternoon and they would have all the paperwork and money ready.
Took a video and photo of Richard and the car people around us thought we were a bit made till they knew we were from Australia. Car load of golfers drove past saying “good on yeh mate” and we all had a laugh. Once the ice was off we managed to maneuver the highway to get to the Dartmouth Ferry Terminal. Took some film of Halifax Harbour front the town, MacDonald Bridge with the $1.00 toll and Georges Island which was once used as a prison for the poor Acadians (French) who were deported from Canada before they were allowed to settle in Nova Scotia.
No free parking here had to go in an undercover parking area which was cheaper than the Ferry Terminal Parking. Just made it in time for the ferry and we were lucky it was Seniors Day today and we didn't have to pay. Nice little journey over the river to Halifax where we walked along the boardwalk saw a lovely old tugboat called Theodore 11 lots of nice old buildings, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, some old sailing ships before arriving at the Information Centre. Lady circled some attractions for us to see as we walked along the boardwalk. The Brewery Market didn't interest us, Bishops landing was old buildings turned into apartments, walked through the Farmers Markets to get warm as the wind cuts right through you it is bloody freezing. A large cruise ship is in and lots of tourists from the cruise are walking around the harbourfront like us enjoying the scenery. We were hoping to go on a tour of Georges Island but apparently it has never been opened to the public which is a pity.
Walked up to Pier 21 where the first immigrants landed in Canada plus we could keep warm inside and have our morning tea in the warmth. Back outside we navigated up to Spring Garden Road where the lady from the Info Centre said there was a sports shop in Parklane Mall where Richard could look at some fishing gear. What a laugh the mall was dead nearly all the shops on the second floor were vacant and the sports shop was a sports shop not a fishing and tackle shop.
Back out in the cold we walked over and up to the Halifax Citadel National Site to tour the inside. The tour brings to life the 78th Highlanders and 3rd Brigade Royal Artillery (1869 to 1871). The volunteer guides are dressed in period costumes one was a drummer and the other a piper part of the Scottish Regiment. The tour was about 45 minutes had a demonstration of rifle firing, saw the soldiers barracks where they ate and slept plus what every soldier owned and carried. Glad I wasn't a soldier. After we could wonder through the Guard Room, Garrison cells, Musketry Gallery a dark long spooky tunnel that was built to allow soldiers to fire into the ditch while under cover.
The ditch is before the citadel and you wouldn't want to fall down that because you can't get out, you are a sitting duck to be killed. It is one fortress you cannot get in with cannons on the walls pointing out over the river and the west (backside). There is a Signal Post with tall masts used to send coded signals to both the citizens of Halifax and to the other forts that protected the harbour. A very interesting fort even though it was very cold and we we freezing.
Walked down past the Town Clock one of the most recognizable landmarks of historical Halifax constructed as a garrison clock on the orders of Prince Edward the Duke of Kent who was Commander-in-Chief of the British forces in North America from 1799 to 1802. Passed old Government buildings to Grand Parade a lovely park where it was warm and sunny to have Lunch and coffee to warm our insides.
Continued down the road to the river where we looked at the historic Properties more old Buildings turned into shops and apartments before catching the ferry back to Dartmouth. Nice to get in the car to warm up and drive around Lake Banook before Richard had a meltdown getting onto Hwy 111 missed a couple of ramps but in the end he managed to get back on the right highway to the hotel.
Nice to be back in a warm room having afternoon tea and muffins. Checked emails and no one wants the car left video Skype messages with Linda and Terry. Put the feet up and watched a couple of Criminal Minds episodes before putting the veggies and lasagne on. Slowly eating all the remaining food had ice milk coffee with yoghurt and cereals for dessert. Caught up with the blog downloaded today’s photos and retired for the night.
