6am arrival at
the Cruise Port Terminal in the town of St George Grenada. Small deep water
wharf which can berth only two cruise ships at a time.
Grenada is the
“Isle of Spice” a volcanic island like Dominica very mountainous, has fertile
soil with lush tropical scenery many gorgeous waterfalls like Canada and
rainforests.
Early buffet
breakfast and start to the day as the cruise ship is only in port for half a
day. Usual security check then proceeded to the end of the pier through the
Esplanade Mall (Duty Free shopping for the passengers) to the Tourist
Information and Richard negotiated with the recommended Taxi Company for an
individual sightseeing tour of Grenada (lot cheaper than the cruise
excursions).
Samuel was our
Driver and Guide for the morning and took us to the sights we wanted to see and
gave us a running description as he was driving along. First was a tour round
the town (it is Market Day today when everyone brings their fruit, veg’s and
spices to town) and it is really a buzz. Past by many small villages as Samuel
drove slowly up and round the mountain side to Fort Frederick a small fort
built by the British and perched on top of Richmond Hill. It has a commanding
vantage point the offers an amazing view of Grenada and its natural harbor. We
were lucky to arrive early as we managed to just beat the tour vans that were
just arriving.
All the roads
are very narrow with lots of pot holes except the main town roads and the one
going to the Resorts. Everyone toots if they want to overtake or go round blind
bends or if the car in front is too slow like Samuel.
Next we went
done the mountain to the other side of St George past the St Louis Marina where
all the expensive boats owned by overseas owners are berthed. Stopped at Grand
Anse Bay where Grenada’s number one beach is, Morne Rouge. Nothing special just
looked like the beaches we walked on in Mauritius we have better in Australia.
Back to the
town centre where Samuel dropped us off at the Fish Market where we could check
out the variety of fish caught and there were some nice big tuna fish and
others we hadn’t seen. Walked down the main street round the shoreline where
the locals were selling their product, wandered through the shops (very colourful
clothing and hairstyles).
Back to the
cruise ship (it’s getting hot) for a swim in the pool and sit in the spa for
the bones. The “Love Boat” Legends of the Sea berthed next to us was
interesting to watch. That will be there till 8pm tonight. We were having lunch
when the Royal Princess departed from the port at 1.30pm and we said our
goodbyes to Grenada.
Restful
afternoon relaxing, made progress with the on-board credits which have been
processed for the Caribbean and Panama Canal cruises. Bad news is we noticed
the “Gratuities” (tipping) had not been including in the final payment for the
cruises. Apparently only Princess cruises around Australia include the
Gratuities not on the east coast of USA where Americans and Canadians travel.
Late dinner
ventured down to Deck 7 to check out the Duty Free digital cameras and other
shops then down to Deck 5 The Atrium “In the Piazza” to listen to the String
Trio followed by live music and dancing with the Rick Kilburn Quartet. People
watching is great especially all the oldies dancing.
