Long Haul to Canterbury

Canterbury, England, United Kingdom
The thirteen and a half hours seemed to go quickly we both managed to get some sleep, it is amazing what a little sleeping pill does when one is tired even the turbulence didn't matter.

Immigration and Customs was a breeze but we did get the third degree with the Immigration Officer (like Border Patrol) because we were staying four to five months possibly past our return flight date.

One felt like the blind leading the blind following passengers down corridors, escalators through the terminal on the train to the Baggage area and finally the Departure area where there was a row of taxi drivers holding name plaques and there is the crowd was our driver Les.

So nice to get into a warm car out of the cold air, so glad to have warm clothes on it is chilly at 5.30am. The ride to Canterbury will take about an hour or so, the traffic is a bit heavy due to fog but the flow of the connecting highways are brilliant. The countryside is a lush green what you can see through the fog and where we are heading is the food bowl of England.

The Victoria Hotel where we will be staying for the night is a quaint old English Inn/hotel like what you see in the movies. It would be lovely to have a room at this early hour but time and no vacancies is against us but thankfully our luggage can be stalled till a clean room is ready for us.

Les was a good chap and drove us to Canterbury at the West Gate, which is the original entry to the town. Lots of old quaint buildings with small doors a good height for us but not a tall basketball player. The main streets are cobblestone and you feel like you are back in the Tudor period with bridges, canals and boats lapping against the little jetties, houses built on the water’s edge. Lots of exploring to do in the next few days but now we are looking for mobile Wi-Fi for the laptop and iPad and SIM for phones.

You wouldn’t believe it our first day in the UK walking down the quiet cobblestone street of Canterbury in the distance Richard spotted a Bidvest Logistics truck and the driver could have been Fab’s brother (same hair cut you know what I mean). Pity the Bidvest logo was only on the back doors, as I would have taken a photo of Richard and the driver. All of Richard’s old co-workers at Bidfood in Perth would have loved it especially Fab.

Three coffees and food isn’t helping the jetlag body and thankfully our room is now ready. An upgrade was much appreciated including the hot bath for the bones before resting for the evening. The hot chocolate sent us off to dreamland including the steady rainfall outside.
