Rain, traffic & sighting a Bidfood truck

Polegate, England, United Kingdom
Misty morning you can smell the fresh country air the grassed area where we are parked in the little caravan site is very damp from last night's steady rainfall. Nothing like waking up next to a paddock with two donkeys looking at you.

In between the showers we managed to walk around the working farm to see the different animals and vegie patches but missed the river where you can go fishing (too wet and soggy). While wondering around their Farm Shop the Owner (farmer) introduced himself a lovely chap and explained to us how the farm worked. They sell what they produce from the land, vegetables, herbs and spices, honey, jams, meat in the butchers shop, freezer section of homemade goods and Café. The only problem they have is the three wind turbines next to their property.

Met a Scottish couple caravanning there and they gave us the name of the next CP Caravan Club site they were going to in Worthing just past Hove. This was handy as Richard's cousin Margaret doesn’t come back from Bromley till tomorrow and we need an interesting place to stay.

We took the farmers suggestion to travel on the A259 round the coast through the rolling hills of the South Downs Way beautiful farm country of sheep, cows, goats and horses. Nice to get away from the big city of Eastbourne all the traffic and small streets.

From the South Downs outside of Eastbourne there is an ancient road (Archaeology Trail) you can walk all the way to Winchester similar to our Bibilmuim Track.

The hilltop view to Seven sisters in the valley is breathtaking nowhere to park or stop because of the traffic to soak in the view just another memory. The single lane bridges over rivers are fun, especially the one near Cuckmere Inn jumps out at you quickly but everyone knows the giveway rules.

Passing over the bridge at Newhaven you can see a small boat harbour on the river and again the parking is a nightmare for motorhomes (height restrictions) another memory. Traffic jam ahead, flashing blue lights of two police cars, ambulance and we have come across our first accident looks like a pedestrian has been knocked down. Took a wide detour like all the other cars and found a turn off to Telscombe Cliffs a very impressive view of the White Cliffs and beach. Good lunch stop and once we were back on the road you wouldn’t believe it but we saw our second Bidfood truck didn’t have time to take a photo.

We have now figured out why the GPS takes us on the main highways and not the short scenic way, it is the quickest route time wise, so now we key in a town halfway before our end destination.

Raining in Brighton and it has changed in 56 years since Richard left, the Bowling Alley is still there but the old Brighton Pier is a shell (burn down many years ago) and there is a new one a distance away.

With the rain and traffic Richard decides to follow the GPS on the highways to Worthing where we will stay on another farm. Well we seem to be going for miles and miles, past Worthing heading inland on lanes in farm country to an out of the way place of Clapham. Took a bit of finding but we found the right farm "Long Furlong Farm" and the Owner Pat Jenkins is a real character. Over 400 acres, bred cattle till 18 months and stable horses, big country house with views all over the valley.

We now know why this site is not in the Caravan and Motorhome Directory the Shower and toilet leaves a lot to be desired looks like the animals have been in there. Soldier on, it is too late to leave the water is hot for a shower and we have our thongs.

The old Scottish couple were crafty giving me a small cream sponge as a gift when we left Sharnfold Farm, saying they were heading there today. They knew what the site was like, on a slope with a view. The three permanent caravans have the best spots but we managed.
