Terradillos, Castilla y León, Spain and Canary Islands

Mike visited Chopit, F**kit, Good'nd Proper for his holiday haircut. I must admit, considering the circumstances, the Coiffeuse didn't do a bad job either and cheap with it too.

We set off for Spain today, more twisty mountain roads but lovely scenery again. We drove through Sabugal and had both sets of teeth loosened in the process because of the cobbled road. You'd think we'd be used to it by now but this town seemed worse.

Mike spotted a sign for an Intermarché so we did a short detour to do some shopping. I thought the last Intermarché we used was bad but this one took the biscuit. You couldn't move in there, it was so small and narrow. The had hardly any appetising fresh meat and none in the chiller cabinets. I've never seen such a small selection of cheeses either and most of what was there were French cheeses. I wanted a pack of chilled Tortellini as that's always a good standby meal but no joy to anything like that. We did what shopping we could. Bought a frozen Tartiflette for our lunch and some other yellow bread/cake thing that I took a fancy to. We loaded up and set off to find a nice place for lunch.

We found a nice spot for our lunch, on the outskirts of a village. Outside the cemetery there was a nice paved area we could pull into. We hoped there'd be no funerals today. Lunch was a bit of a disaster all round really. I broke a chunk of the cakey thing to taste, didn't really taste of anything but looked a bit greasy so I threw it into my double skillet (using like an oven). I thought it might taste nicer warm. Then I caught the smell of scorching sugar! Quickly devided that it was done enough, whatever 'done' might mean! It did taste better warm. I should have photographed it, one of you might have recognised it for what it was or I could have searched on the Almighty Google.

The Tartiflette was no better so the less said about that the better. Whilst the Tartiflette was cooking, I propped my little mirror up on the wall outside - not the cemetery, I wouldn't be so inconsiderate to the inhabitants, and gave my fringe a bit of a chop. I can now see out from under.

We got underway and continued on towards the Spanish border. Not far up the road we saw what we took to be some kind of gypsy horse fair. We didn't see a bull ring or any bulls but some of the riders were dressed in some sort of traditional clothing so we decided it was some sort of horsey thing.

At Vilar Formoso, just before the actual border, although I suppose it could be frontier-land we came face to face with a glass building housing an old steam engine and after rounding the bend in the road came face to face with a beautiful station all decorated outside with the Portuguese blue and white tiles. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get a photo of it.

Before we knew it we were into Spain.

Here we went straight onto the A62 Autovia and after a few kilometres of Olive groves the scenery changed completely to flat lands, mostly big arable fields and some cattle. The drive was a little on the boring side and as I was getting tired of knitting I suggested to Mike that we change over.

On our arrival here we were surprised to see three motorhomes here already and another pulled up after we'd arrived. We'd stopped here on our way down last year with Sheila, Barry, Patricia and Dave and we were the only ones here. Imagine our surprise when four more vans came in with three of them driving abreast of on another. It is a big car parking area with a specific area for campers but there are no other cars. They obviously wanted to park close together and couldn't so they left but they could be just around the corner having their own Easter party.

The GNR have been around with their blue light on, just to check that all is as it should be.

We are about 9 km south-east of Salamanca and it's been hot again today.

Happy Easter everyone.

Santander I believe there is a free aire you can see the elephants from. An elephant rescue sanctuary I believe ...,we didn't make it too much of a detour xx
