Glencoe and The Lost Valley

Glencoe Village, Scotland, United Kingdom
We got up at 8:00 for an 8:30 breakfast. We had told Maureen what we wanted last night and it was all ready for us. Larry and Erin and bacon, egg, and potato scone. I added a grilled tomato and black pudding to mine. We had tea and toast. I could get used to this. After breakfast we headed to the Glencoe Visitor Center. It was only a short distance away. They had quite a thorough exhibit of the history, geology, natural history and folk lore of the area. There was a short film on the geology of the area which was well done with no narration, just animation and a few words. There was another film on the massacre of the MacDonalds that took place in Glencoe Village in 1692. Some of the people who survived the massacre fled to The Lost Valley in the Three Sisters Mountains just outside the village. We went to the gift shop and cafe. I bought a Christmas ornament of Santa Claus in a Tartan. We also got sandwiches and pastry for our lunches.

We drove up A82 to Loch Achtriochtan where we could see Ossian's Cave . Ossian was supposedly a poet whose poems were collected and translated from Gaelic to English. But there is controversy about whether he is myth or real. Then we drove up to view the Three Sisters Mountains: Aonach Dubh, Gearr Aonach and Bienn Fhada. There was a bagpiper at this lay by. We decided to hike the trail to the Lost Valley between the second and third sisters. First we went down a trail from the parking lot and connected with the trail to the valley. That trail went down and down some more until we reached a set of steel steps that led to a bridge over the burn even further below. Then the hike started going up and up over rocks that we had to scramble over to get up. We went across a boggy meadow on wooden beams to keep us out of the muck. Then we went up and up some more. When we got to the spot where at the next curve we would lose the view of the valley we stopped to have our lunch. While we were eating I asked a couple coming down the mountain what the trail was like ahead of us. When they told me it was even more rocky and narrower and the last bit was a lot of climbing over rocks, I decided to return to the car . Larry and Erin went the rest of the way.   On the way back down a nice young man from Italy, helped me get down the worst part. Thank goodness or I would have had to wait for Larry and Erin to help me. I got to the car in good form even though my knee was hurting. Thank goodness I had brought my iPad with me so I had something to do for the two hours I waited for them to return. When they told me what the trail had been like, I knew I had made the right decision.

We decided to drive through the rest of the mountains to look for another hike we might do tomorrow, The Devil's Staircase. We stopped at the Falls of Glencoe and took some pictures. We stopped at a couple of other places and then drove out through the moor on the other side of the mountains until we came to ski resort. At that point we turned around and came back to Glencoe and had showers before supper.

We went back to the Clachaig Inn for supper and drinks. I had Thistly Cross Cider, regular, as they were out of the Elderflower. Larry had Cairngorm Callie and Cairngorm Black Gold and Erin had Loch Ness Stout and Cairngorm Black Gold. For supper Erin and I had Game Pie with salad and chips or potatoes. The game pie had venison, rabbit, partridge, pigeon, pheasant and mallard with blackberries and juniper berries seasoned with tarragon and Islay Botanist gin. I loved it. Larry had haggis, neeps and tatties again. After supper we came back to the room and blogged and looked at pictures.
