Flying is Never a Done Deal

Galena, Ohio, United States
We got up at 7:00 and left by 7:30. When we got to the tram stop we only had to wait 4 minutes for the next tram to the airport. We got there in about half an hour and walked to the terminal and got in line for United Airlines. After were finished answering the security questions we were just waiting in line when I heard a ticket clerk ask if anyone was on the 12:05 flight to Newark. I raised my hand and she asked us to come to her desk. She said they would put us on an earlier flight that was boarding NOW as there was trouble with the later flight. So we got our tickets with earlier flights to Newark and Columbus, got our bags tagged and took them to be expedited for loading on the plane. We only got to wave goodbye to Erin as she waited in line. They let us go through the Fast Track at security which still meant taking off shoes, taking out computers etc. At least we didn't have to wait in the very long line for regular security. It was still quite a walk to the gate. We took the time to use the restroom and still got there as they were boarding group 3 and we were group 4.    We got seats together i the last row of the plane right by the restrooms. We needn't have hurried. After we got on they were still waiting for more passengers and bags from the noon flight to get on board until our plane was full. We left about 40 minutes late but we were the lucky ones. After we were in the air we found out from the United website that our flight was cancelled and later found out there was engine trouble. We assumes they tried to get some of the rest of our flight on Erin's flight to Chicago as her flight left an hour late leaving her only an hour and a half to get through immigration and customs at O'Hare. (Erin told us later that her pilot was given a more direct flight and given permission to speed up so that they were only 2 minutes late.)

Our flight to Newark was almost 7 hours and we were only 12 minutes late. We got through immigration and customs without a hitch, picked up our luggage and rechecked it, took the monorail to our terminal and found our gate. It was only about 10 minutes and they started boarding our flight. We talked to Derek and let him know we would be home at 4:00 instead of 8:45 and made plans to go out for dinner at: The Pub - an English pub at Polaris where they wear kilts and serve English/Scottish beer.

We got to Columbus shortly before 4:00 and called Erin in Chicago. She still had 4 more hours of flying to do. When we were ready to leave the airport we called Derek to let him know we would be at Polaris soon. He beat us there and was sitting at the bar when we arrived. For supper I got shepherd's pie, Derek had fish and chips and Larry got the pot roast. Derek came to the house for a while and we watched Rick Steves Scotland and then an episode of Vicious - classic British humor with Ian McKellan and Derek Jacobi. Derek went home and we went to bed.
