North Tamborine, Queensland, Australia
Day 133 As soon as we woke up this morning one of the volunteers at the info center came out to meet us, (I think they might have been watching). She came offering promises of showers and knowledge. We took her up on her offer and took a nice hot shower courtesy of the city of Ipswich. We then proceeded to fill our brains with to-dos. As it turns out the info center was located at Queen's Park, which happened to have many things to do. After a nice cup of plunger coffee at the center, we took the short walk to Nerima Gardens, apparently named after their sister city in China. It was swell. From there we ventured over to the nature center which featured a whack of OZ wildlife such as, Quolls, Monitors, Wombats, Roos and a few others. It was a great way to spend the morning walking around and taking pics. They had a bunch of rock wallabies caged in an electric fence, which when I asked was cause they can bound off things. None of the Wallabies have ever done it (why would they, food and shelter who'd want to leave), but it was just in case. From there we headed back to the city center for some window shopping. We picked up a few groceries then headed back to the van still parked at the info center. After a quick sandwich lunch we were back on the tourist drive towards Boonah. We took our cut off, Beaudesert Rd. just before reaching Boonah, and within a few kilometers were greeted by the police as the road was closed due to an accident. We followed his instructions and took the old Beaudesert Rd., which was supposed to take us around the accident. It turned out to be narrow and some parts unpaved. As we got to the end of this old road we hit the line up. The accident happened so close to the intersection that it closed the corner, I think mostly so a helicopter could land. We were in no hurry so we waited...and waited...and waited some more. It took about an hour before the chopper lifted off and the roads were reopened. The rest of the drive was pretty uneventful, we hit the town of Tambourine and shortly there after the long narrow, twisting mountain road to North Tambourine high up in Tambourine Mountain. Tambourine National Park is a plateau 550m above sea level. It is just 30 kms inland from the busy tourist hub of Surfer's Paradise. By the time we arrived it was dusk. We found a place to park for the night. It was in a section called Knoll National Park. we attempted to get a pic of the sunset but seemed to be a few minutes too late. We went back to the van cooked dinner and settled in for the night.
