Port Douglas, Queensland, Australia
Day 214 After a good sleep and a two dollar coffee (that's cheap here) the library was next for some internet. After this we ran some errands which for us is buying gas for the hot plate n things like that. Coming out of one of the stores we noticed to our dismay that the Jerry can was missing off the roof rack. Shit. We are not sure when this happened - thinking while we were at the library - they left everything else that was up there. The punks even went as far as to tie everything back down, not sure if this was out of conscience so we don't lose anything if we don't notice and start driving or to not draw attention. Either way we were out a Jerry can of fuel and added this to our errands. We left Cairns soon after and headed up Captain Cook Highway towards Port Douglas. We stopped once for groceries and decided to pull in to Palm Cove and ended up staying the night.
The next morning we explored this Palm cove. It was a small ocean front town. The few kilometer water front main street was lined with expensive restaurants and resorts. We walked up the beach side footpath and then doubled back on the street side. We finished our coffees during our walk and left the Palm Cove. The rest of the drive to Port Douglas was fantastic! Through yet another part of this World Heritage Wet Tropics for 28 kms. The road wound along the mountain side as the ocean splashed the sand and rocks on the other. We stopped for a photo shoot at Rex Look out, high on a cliff. Clear skies for a superb view. We pulled in to Port Douglas mid afternoon and immediately had lunch. Following the fish and chips special at the Ironbar we went to explore the rest of the tourist packed downtown. We walked from the marina on one end to the esplanade on the other. Info centers, boutiques, bars and restaurants lined both sides of the street and kept getting busier by the hour as the Friday night traffic started to pick up. The Cowboys were knocked out but the playoffs were still on and Friday is game day. We sat down at the Central Hotel's patio for happy hour and with our drinks we got raffle tickets. Ended up spending the rest of our night there before heading to the van to crash.
