Litchfield National Park, Northern Territory, Australia
Day 232 The following day it was more driving. Within an hour of driving we hit Kathrine, the biggest between Alice Springs and Darwin at 9000 people. Besides a national park and some Aboriginal museums it really doesn't have much to offer so we moved on quickly. We stopped for gas in
Pine Creek and took a quick look at an old gold mine from a lookout.
We were once again looking for somewhere to cool down, Litchfield National Park was close to Darwin and recommended by locals. On our way through the park to the campsite we stopped to inspect some massive Cathedral Termite mounds. They were about 5 meters high and estimated to be up to 50 years old. When we got to the campsite, we quickly set up shop and hurried down to the base of Florence Falls to the plunge pool for a swim. The swim was fantastic but the night wasn't. It was really humid and hard to sleep even in the tent.
I keep forgetting to mention the fly issue out here in the outback. There are lots of flies and they are annoying. It is hard to imagine but at any given time there is up to a dozen buzzing around landing everywhere especially around the eyes, nose and mouth. Luckily they go away at night but they are right back with the sunrise.
This morning we packed up right away and went down for another swim and a photo session before the plunge pool got too busy. Then it was time to hit Darwin, our over 2500 kilometer journey halfway across the continent about to reach the finish line. We made it in no time as we were under a hundred kilometers away. So far we just walked the downtown getting acquainted with the area and trying to stay cool. It's not working, it's hot.
