Dawson Creek to Whitehorse

The title may be confusing, since I drove up the Stewart-Cassiar Highway and joined the Alaska Highway at Watson Lake, Yukon and not at Mile 0 in Dawson Creek.

For the sake of the photo blog, I decided to include my photos of Dawson Creek and Mile 0 taken during the trip to the Northwest Territories.

Having arrived at the junction of the Stewart-Cassiar and Alaska Highway late at night, I opted to drive 20 km east to Watson Lake in the hopes of finding a restaurant.

However, the two restaurants in this small town were already closed.

The next morning I discovered Sign Post Forest .

It wasn't long after that I had tears in my eyes for I was moved by the immensity of this effort. It had started as something small and over the years, it literally mushroomed into a world wide movement to be a part of this special place.

Even on this day tourists were arriving with their little signs and hammer ready to make another contribution to the forest.

The Alaska Highway from Watson Lake to Whitehorse is a wide highway in excellent condition. At this time of year, there is little traffic and a lot of the businesses along the way (the few that there are) are already closed for the season.

As my photos attest, the scenery on this stretch is average and a far cry from my drive along the Stewart-Cassiar Highway.

But, it definitely gets better after Whitehorse ----
