ALASKA: Blog 36 - Part 4

Whitehorse, Yukon

Having heard about Whitehorse since high school, it was great to finally be here.

It was with a great deal of enthusiasm that I made the most of my limited time to get to know this city.

My thoughts kept drifting back to Yellowknife and the extensive blogging which produced a bonding with that city.

It would be fun to give Whitehorse the same treatment but due to time restraints most of my story will have to be conveyed by photos.

So what is the bottom line, which is the better town?

Yellowknife is definitely my sentimental favorite for the reasons I outlined in my blogs . However, Whitehorse is downright cute when the downtown areas are compared.

Both cities have similar populations of just under 20,000 but Yellowknife definitely has the "bigger town" feel about it. I am still amazed at the number of medium rise office buildings to be found in Yellowknife and which are absent here. I think the answer lies in "diamonds".

Yellowknife also has a definite advantage when it comes to government buildings, museum and library.

Yellowknife also has; the Old Town which does an excellent job in preserving heritage, the Precambrian Shield, the spreading out of the town into an interesting pattern conducive to non-urban sprawl.

Whitehorse also does well in that respect insofar as the downtown is almost exclusively commercial whereas residential parts of the town are on the north-east side of the river.

Yellowknife also seems to have the advantage with respect to recreational paths for walking or biking with the Frame Lake circuit being an outstanding example .

Both have imposing physical settings on the water with Great Slave Lake and the Yukon River but the snow capped mountains one sees from Main Street in Whitehorse are quite spectacular.

Most of my points seem to be leaning in favour of Yellowknife but like I say, Whitehorse is cute and that is a word I would not apply to Yellowknife.
