Why have I not been blogging for the last month?

I have been traveling

My trip has taken me by car from Prince George, BC to Montreal, QC via Western Canada and the north coast of Lake Superior to our cottage near Grand Bend on Lake Huron. From there I drove to Montreal to join Barbara who is here for three weeks.

I will be driving back to Prince George, BC in September via the U.S.

There will be a new twist to my travel blog when I start blogging this trip in October.

To date, I have shot about 15 hours of video, including about 20 short interviews. By the time I get home at the end of September that should be up to 40 hours of video.

So far the trip has been great and I have had a lot of fun doing the video blogging. The skills needed are different from a written/photo blog. The biggest challenge is to deal with the sound of my own voice, noticing all the idiosyncrasies in my manner of speaking, thinking of something intelligent to say at the spur of the moment and seeing myself on video. The last challenge I have not yet met as I have taken almost no video of myself to this point.

I have taken the tack of attaching themes to my blogs such as "Searching for the Flattest Spot in Saskatchewan" or "Why is it called 'Friendly Manitoba'?" For the most part I try and use short interviews to get the answers to my questions.

I noticed that my video blogs improved a whole lot when I joined Barbara here in Montreal. She seems to take to video like a fish to water. She is photogenic and real quick on her feet in terms of describing verbally what she is looking at. She has great writing skills and I see her verbal skills are just as good. With two people participating in the easy banter regarding a subject matter, it is a great improvement over a monologue. It is too bad that Barbara does not have the time to join me on the way home for the drive across the U.S. It would make the video blog that much better.

Having said that I think I have improved in my solo video blogging and I hope to get better as I go along.

The end result of all this will be a change in my blog from a written/photo blog to a written (very little)/video blog.

I am looking forward to editing this video blog and the new challenges in getting it on the Internet during the fall and winter months in Prince George.

Getting back to Hawaii

My Hawaiian blog is nearing its end. There is one more blog to do for the island of Maui and then about six for the island of Kauai.

This I hope to get done before the end of September so I can get started on my new video blog when I get back to Prince George.
