Princeville Kauai - The Most Popular Vacation Destination in Kauai

Located 32 miles north of Lihue, Princeville is a 9,000 acre planned resort community on the north shore of Kauai. It is unique on the island due to its relative newness and the absence of any architecture which would not fit into the scheme of things.

To some extent this creates a certain predictability but on the other hand if the luxury of a perfectly planned community is what you want, Princeville is the place to rent a condo and to have a great golfing holiday or just to explore the Napali Coast.

We tried to rent a condo in Princeville at the time that Barbara was making the reservations for our trip but the process is not quite as computerized as hotels. It still involves a return call and further conversations. That and the obvious fact that renting a condo would be more expensive than the Kauai Sands Hotel in Wailua all conspired against us renting in Princeville .

So what does a "planned community" offer? By its very nature such a community is usually located in a spectacular setting and Princeville is at the head of the list as it is right on beautiful Hanalei Bay. Apart from the condos there are the Princeville Hotel and the Hanalei Bay Resort. Golf is offered in abundance as are a variety of other sporting activities centered on the beautiful beaches and the pristine waters of the Pacific Ocean.

After driving the twisted residential streets of the planned community looking at condos that we might have been able to rent, we "slummed" it by spending an hour in the confines of the Princeville Hotel. Our enjoyment was just soaking up the atmosphere and sharing a little bit in a life style which we could only dream about . I use that phrase loosely as I could not imagine myself living in such surroundings as I am comfortable with a near-Spartan life style. Now as for Barbara, I don't think she would have any trouble adapting to the Princeville Hotel.

The rest of the afternoon was spent in driving to the end of Highway 56 where famous Kee Beach is located. This is also the start of the spectacular Napali Coast with its giant sea cliffs and folded mountains. It is the most spectacular coast line in Hawaii, unfortunately only accessible by air, sea or hiking.

As a later blog will show, our method of exploring this coast was hiking.
