Poipu and the Spouting Hole

On our way to Poipu our attention was riveted on a collection of pristine white buildings sitting in the middle of nowhere. It turned out to be St. Raphael, the oldest Catholic Church on Kauai, constructed 1841.

Poipu is a major resort area on the south coast offering a choice of luxury resorts, time-share condos and bed and breakfast accommodations.

For us the main attraction was a nearby seaside lava tube that, like the geysers in Yellowstone National Park, shoots water high into the air. Wave action forces water under high pressure though a lava tube with spectacular results. This natural wonder is called Spouting Hole.

Poipu is also renowned for its beautiful beaches and sunsets.
