Another Hawaiian Sunset or Is It?

A problem with going to Hawaii at Christmas time is that the sun sets at around 17:45. Yes, I know back home in Prince George, British Columbia it sets at 16:30 but there is an expectation that when the destination is tropical in nature, the days are going to be a lot longer.

Well it gets worse, since Hawaii is relatively close to the equator, the sun sets around 19:00 in the middle of summer.‎

Therefore I conclude that Hawaii may be great for a lot of things, but long hours of daylight is not one of them.

My trip to Argentina in February 2006 made amply clear the concept of the reversal of seasons between the northern and southern hemispheres. Going to Ushuaia in February could mean a sunset at 23:00. So if long hours of daylight is desirable, the southern hemisphere is the place to go during our winter months .

So relatively short daylight hours is the bad news about Hawaii but the good news is that while the sunsets may be early they are often spectacular.

It is tough to travel with Barbara and not get a countdown as to how many minutes are remaining before the sun sets. This day was no exception but we still had to scramble to get into position.

Being in position this time was Waimea Recreational Pier State Park.

As the photos indicate, on this day the sunset would be particularly beautiful and we lingered and lingered "till the last dog was hung" to use an inappropriate expression.

Looking at these photos would confirm my suspicion that this was not just another Hawaiian sunset but the best we experienced in the Hawaiian Islands.

Coming Soon: Flight back to Honolulu and Waikiki Beach
