In Mexico I was hampered in my blogging by a virus infested computer. I had the viruses removed once back in Canada only to have the computer give up the ghost completely. Fortunately the photos on the hard drive were recoverable so I am back in the game of blogging. I promise, I won't take a year to finish this blog like I did for Hawaii.

Mexico: 23 Destinations to Spend the Winter Months

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pre-Amble

Our trip to Mexico was inspired by a desire to avoid the winter months in Canada by spending some time in Mexico.
The question then became where would be a good place in Mexico to spend those winter months.
An article by Suzan Haskins in International Living entitled "16 Places in Mexico to Live Very Well on Very Little" was the "coup d'envoie" which launched us on our 42-day discovery trip in search of such a place .
You can find the article at the International Living website (www.internationalliving.com) and doing a search for the number "16".
Our great trip ended on January 24, 2009 and I can now report that our search took us to ten of the destinations mentioned in the article plus 13 other destinations for a total of 23.
The purpose of this blog is to share the information we discovered, in writing and particularly in photographs.

Tequisquiapan - Number One on Our List (First of 23 Destinations)

Part 1 of 2

=======================================================

Since we landed in Mexico City and decided to see the Monarch butterflies near Angangueo, our route to start our 23 town/city tour was pretty clear. From Angangueo we would travel by public bus via Tlalpujahua, see previous blog, to Tequisquiapan.

In theory this would be the first of 23 towns/cities that we would try to visit and evaluate in 42 days.

Yes, it is an impossible task but we shall do what we can, given the time limits . Above all this list provides an interesting way of exploring Mexico in an extraordinary manner.   The way we approached our discovery tour would take us northwest of Mexico City into the central highlands and beautiful colonial towns/cities. From there we would head towards the Pacific coast, then all the way south to Chiapas and finally ending in the Yucatan where we would fly home from Cancun.

This brings me back to Tequisquiapan.

Suffice it to say that we could not have found a nicer place to kick off our 23 town/city tour.

It all started with our good fortune in having a taxi driver take us to the Posada Tequisquiapan. Our good fortune did not stop there. We ended up with a room that came with a large terrace overlooking a beautiful interior landscaped court. Given the beautiful warm weather and the semi-tropical surroundings, this was one place we were not eager to leave. The last time we had a room like this was in Lucca, Italy in the Tuscany region. This ideal start certainly put us in a positive frame of mind to discover this wonderful town .

Should Tequisquiapan be your destination for a long-term stay (see next blog), then the Posada Tequisquiapan, at 200 pesos a night, ($20 Can.) would be a good place to stay till you find more permanent accommodations.
