Teachers Day & Chilgok Confucian Academy

Daegu, South Korea
Friday I was told afternoon classes were cancelled for Teachers Day. I asked what that was, they said there will be a ceremony for the teachers. After lunch we went over to the small auditorium. The ceremony was being filmed and televised in all the classrooms upstairs.

First they played the anthem and we all stood and placed our right hand over our heart . They they played the anthem again and everyone sang. Next the Principal made a speech and him and the vice principal were awarded flower pins.

After that there was a slide show with shots of all the teachers. I knew there was one of me coming because kids kept asking to take my picture about a week before and I had about seven different kids take one. They had funny captions by each teacher.

Next a group of students did a boy band dance, well choreographed. Then everyone sang another song like a hymn and everyone left after that. Bit of a strange hour but nice nontheless.

Behind the school is a confucian academy. Its always locked but this week it has been open. Since I had my camera decided to go over for a look. I tried once before when I came to chilgok. Inside were a few elders doing calligraphy. They tried talking to me so I explained I was the teacher from next door and couldnt speak much korean.

They offered me coffee and one guy was trying to draw a map explaining what the six buildings were. Access to the four buildings in the back were locked and he showed me he didnt have the key, but there was an english sign saying the complex dates from 1398.

It always make a scenic backdrop from the corridor windows but the whole time I've been here its always locked so I've never really been able to explore properly. Makes for some scenic shots of the school though. This is what I get to look at everyday!!! :-))
