Sunday morning the plan was to take the bus from busan to geoje to catch the 11.30 cruise around the island. We were supposed to meet at 9.30 at the bus terminal but I was meeting a friend at 9 at the train station by my motel and heading over together. We made it to the bus station at 9.50 when I had told the first group to leave early on the bus.
Luckily there was another bus at 10
.10 so we got on that with two other people from our group we met up with. Last time I took the bus it was 40 mins. Now it was 1hr 20 mins as it goes to the airport first. Now why does an island like geoje need an airport bus every 20 mins when daegu a city of 3 million only has one every two hours???
So we get to Gohyeon at 11.35 as the cruise was leaving, and the first group was able to get on the first sailing. Our group of four had something for lunch then headed to the POW camp about 20 mins away. This is a living re-enactment of the korean war, unlike the DMZ which is a ghost town, and entrance was only 3000w.
I had already been in Feb so didnt take any pics, but here is my early blog entry with all the pics
http://www.travelpod.com/travel-blog-entries/londone7/1/1297327269/tpod.html
Then we just about made it to the cruise at 2.30 on the nose. Luckily most boats I've been on dont sail on time
. The parking lot was full of coaches of koreans that were still boarding. The cruise was 19,000w for almost two hours and I thought it would be very scenic around the coastline seeing beaches, rocks, and islands.
As we boarded there was a raging disco in the 'Mermaid Room' on the lower deck full of pensioners. We made our way to the middle deck as all the good spots on the top deck were gone and it was too hot. The cruise wasnt as scenic as I thought as the region was very industrial with shipbuilding yards and crane platforms throughout the sea.
What turned out to be more of a highlight was the raging pensioners disco on two floors. The top covered deck had an outdoor disco with a live korean singer. These pensioners really knew how to boogie. Then he got out his saxaphone and was really jamming.
I made it down to the Mermaid Room on the lower level to see how that one was going
. This was a packed room the entire length of the boat, full of pensioners, complete with rotating disco lighting, and a DJ. I was speechless, just when you thought you had seen everything in korea. Thats what all those bus loads at the parking lot were for.
When the cruise ended and our group waited in line to go to the lower decks to get off we passed the Mermaid Room again. We could still hear the thud thud of the music going. The room was still packed wall to wall. Nobody told these people the party was over and time to go home. These people really knew how to boogie and were having a ball of a time.
Now the plan was to goto Tongyeong back on the mainland to see the Turtleship and Undersea Japanese tunnel, but we were behind on our timing. I was thinking of staying the nite in a motel and doing the stuff the next day but instead took the 6.10 bus back to Daegu. This was 2.5hrs for 12,800w. So got home by 10pm.
