Farewell to my Middle School

Friday, August 23, 2013
Daegu, South Korea

With Friday as the final day at my school for this past year we were to have a teachers dinner on Wednesday. I had a bottle of ice wine I wasn't able to get rid of for the last year so I offered to share it while everyone was together as a leaving gift.

We've been to this restaurant before and she also offered us iced pomegranate tea due to the hot weather. (see earlier entry http://blog.travelpod.com/travel-blog-entries/londone7/1/1364334103/tpod.html)

Friday was my last day and I was looking forward to my last school lunch. When I came in they said the Principal wanted to take me to lunch and for me to choose a restaurant. Everyone felt very awkward towards the Principal but I felt fine since I never have to deal with him and he was one of the students in my teachers English class.

We decided on a nearby seafood restaurant and mad a mixed seafood stew with vegetables cooked on our table.

The Principal had said he had a meeting at 4pm. Thinking he was leaving at 4pm I rushed off after lunch and didn't thank him properly or say goodbye thinking I could come back and do it properly when I give him my gift. Turns out he left right after lunch so I never did get to say goodbye

With all the panic of everything going on for the last few days I forgot to get gifts for the school. Friday morning I asked if I could order rice cake for everyone. As it was short notice the bakery said it would come by 3pm

It felt sad making my way round the 2nd grade classes saying my goodbyes as many of them had grown very fond of me and me of them. I then went around with my co-teacher delivering the rice cakes by 4pm and saw many rooms I didn't know such as the nurses room, PE teachers room, art teachers room, math teachers room, science teachers room.

It was a nice rice cake with a bean paste jam in the middle. The four boxes I ordered cost 65,000w ($60) and there was almost a box left which we all divided between ourselves.

In the evening I met my Korean friend at an Uzbek restaurant he wanted to try. We had samsa and kebabs with Uzbek bread. I don't know when I will eat Uzbek food again after I leave Korea

I also gave the restaurant all the crap cds/dvds I had bought in Uzbekistan as a gift as I didn't want to ship them home and didn't know who else would want them.

I did a walk around downtown at many of the palces I would hang out. There is a new concert hall just opened by Daegu Station

Immigration also sent me a text telling me to leave and another notice in the mail . There was a really nice sunset that evening
