Luckily I did see buses running at the terminal so I just had to find the airport bus. It is located near Tanjung Aru so I tried asking a bus heading there if he goes to the airport. They said no and pointed me to another bus which hadnt arrived. I tried asking another Tanjung Aru bus for another landmark near the airport but they kept sending me to the airport bus which wasnt running.
I waited by the bus for either passengers or a driver but it just sat there. After a while two Australian backpackers stood next to the bus so I joined them and eventually the driver came over.
Bus fare was 1.50Rm (.50 cents) and stopped at the terminal. There are two terminals on opposite sides of the runway. I arrived at the international terminal but was now leaving from the original terminal now used by low cost carriers on the other side of the runway. Because they are opposite ends its important to board the right bus as there is no terminal connection.
As today was the Hari Raya Eid holiday no local Malays were flying and it was only Chinese staff at the airport and Chinese passengers. As mentioned due to the holiday the normal $49 flight to Penang had jumped to $156 yesterday and $116 today.
When we left Kota Kinabalu I saw the islands with the floating village along with the city 'floating' mosque.
On arrival at Penang nobody was at the tourist info desk so I couldnt ask about buses into the city. The airport is at the south end and the town is the northern end a 40 min bus ride away.
I was waiting with a chinese guy who spoke good english. A cab driver approached us and tried to charge us 20Rm each ($7) to take a cab into the city and drop us at each of our hotels. We said we only needed to be dropped once and can walk to each others hotels as they were close but that 20x2 was too much when other airport taxis were 25Rm.
The bus did come after that and only charged 2.70Rm (.90 cents). It took about an hour in slow traffic to get to the town centre where we both got off and walked to our hotels.
The town was more historical and I eventually found my hostel. The room was nice but seemed to have a see thru window though it was actually frosted glass so ok.
