Arrival in Odessa was an older small Soviet style building. After the rain in Toronto you could feel the heat on arrival. With most tourists going to Kiev I expected passport control to ask me a lot of questions about my itinerary and what I was doing here. He said nothing and simply stamped my passport.
First I exchanged 300 Eu for about 8400 UH. Several cab drivers were waiting in the arrivals hall and buzzing around like mosquitos. I kept saying 'no' and headed out the building. One continued to follow me as I made my way to the bus stop.
Not knowing if it was the right tram I got on just to get away from the cab driver who refused to give up. There is supposed to be a tram direct to the train station in the town centre but the driver spoke no english when I tried to ask.
It was run down from the 1970s or older and the seat came off in my hand! It was the right tram and you paid 3 UH to the driver when leaving (.15 cents). On arrival at the main railway station I needed a drink and was able to find a variety store where I bought something for 15 UH (.75 cents).
My hotel was by the Opera house about a 2 km walk from the train station. The town was run down with some poverty but had historic charm. My hotel was a 2 level loft style apartment in an older historical building. It was nice to relax after my long flight but with my odd sleep hours I only slept from 8pm to 2am.
