Dolac Market and Afternoon Biking Zagreb

Monday, April 30, 2018
Zagreb, Croatia
Today I woke up and had no energy to move. All the daily travel and lack of sleep was piling up. I'd waken up at 2am and slept again till 5am. I watched tv in bed till about 11 eating some dry food I had to give me energy. Today was supposed to be my biking day.
The produce market sets up in the mornings which I could see from my terrace. I went down take a look and see if I could get some fruits.
They had lots of fresh strawberries that had a strong aroma. They were selling for different prices depending on size. I got a basket for 10K ($2).
They were very sweet and I rested back in the apartment till 2pm to avoid the heat. I did my online check in to get my window seats and ordered a taxi to the airport for tomorrow morning.
Heading back down there was supposed to be a bike rental place on the main square. To find it you have to go into the inner courtyard of the building to find some more stores.
Rental was 75K ($15) for 3 hours.
In the centre was too crowded with people and passing trams so I headed south a few blocks to where there was a bike lane on the one way street heading west. I retraced my steps from yesterday back to the National Theatre and Museums which had closed.
I was quite impressed by the architecture. For a Hapsburg provincial town it seemed more grander than what I remembered in the capital Vienna.
I made my way south to the railway station which was busy again with people and passing trams.
I then followed one of the tram lines eastwards which would take me back to the old town. I was supposed to go south of the river but I just didnt have the energy today
Aside from the lack of bike lanes were passers by too busy on their phones or texting to pay attention and I had to take extra effort to keep avoiding them.
Heading back to the old town I retraced some of my walking route from yesterday. It was getting busy again with passers by.
Underneath the old town is a tunnel. I dont know its age or what it was used for. It ran in a straight line east west and had a couple of entrances to the south. It was a good way in summer months to keep cool.
Back out the tunnels I made my way back to the main square where I had started. After returning the bike I needed a good meal for energy and protein.
I was craving fries and coke so found a place on the main square for 36K ($7). It was a good biking day and I could have done more on the south side if I had more energy.
