Saturday morning I was going to rent a bike for a couple of hours in Old San Juan. I'd just been biking in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and wanted to be out early before the heat.
The rental place is inside the fort walls at Castillo de San Cristobal. Rental price was $18US for 3 hours. The bike did not have brakes on the handlebar but a reverse braking system.
Heading away from the old town first I was going to go to the Candado district which can not be reached on foot in the heat. There are two east west one way streets in the old island and they have a bike lane for access.
Condado has its own lagoon I wanted to bike around but the trail doesnt follow it properly. I overshot the north side into city streets so had to navigate back down. The south side does have a trail but there is too much foilage to be able to see the lagoon.
Back in the old town I was going to follow the trail along the northern waterfront. This runs parallel to the east west road I had come on. Back at the Fort where I started I went down to the south promenade where the cruise ships dock.
I then made my way to the city walls to circle Castillo San Felipe del Morro. Technically this is a walking trail and biking is not allowed.
I thought it would circle the fort but it led me into foilage trails not made for biking. I followed to the end where there was a cemetery but the trail ended so I had to retrace back.
Again not designed for biking I had to climb up and down several staircases. Eventually I was inside the moat so still trying to find my way out which I eventually did.
