Newark Penn Station, New Jersey, United StatesArriving at Newark Liberty International Airport I now had to take local transit to get to Manhattan as the cheapest option and as I like to explore local transit. I had read the options in wikitravel and someone at the tourist booth also helped when I was getting maps.
First you exit from the terminal and goto the New Jersey transit bus stop which is the far end on the third roadway. You will take bus #62 heading to Penn Station, not Elizabeth which is the opposite way.
Exact cash fare is $1.60. No change is given and I still had change left over from my Puerto Rico trip in Feb 2020 before lockdowns. The bus is only used by locals and will go thru some run down areas with visible poverty on streets so be respectful. The ride is perfectly safe during daylight hours.
On arrival at Penn Station I needed to buy a PATH train ticket for $2.75. This time you can use machines and it will provide change. You can also pay by debit or credit card.
The train tracks are confusing as there are NJ Amtrak trains so I had to ask where the PATH trains are. You go thru another turnstile and enter your ticket.
The PATH train at NJ Penn Station is the Red line to World Trade Centre in lower Manhattan. To get to Midtown and Times Square you can change at Journal Square to the Yellow line.
I don't think I saw any other foreigners from the airport taking this route. Again safe during daylight hours unlike the movies that show gangs on train carriages.
The train runs underground the whole route so nothing to see. It will terminate on 33rd St in Midtown Manhattan. From here it is a short walk to 42nd st where Times Square is and a short walk to my hotel.
