I always like to visit Metro systems on my travels hence TheMetroBlog. During my visit to Iran I was interested to visit the Tehran Metro. This was an odd request as normally tourists do not use the Metro. For the Iran Visa you have to file your itinerary with the Ministry. Even the Ministry was questioning why does he want to use the Metro?
The Ministry even called my guide Moshen. Fortunately he is someone that uses Metro's on his travels so explained it is interesting to explore and see different transit systems and unique station architecture
I had the same questioning from my hotel in Cairo. Why do you want to use the Metro? It doenst go to the Pyramids? However it is interesting to explore transport systems in foreign cultures
Entrance is 45,000 ($0.10 US) and unlike Cairo there were no police or security screenings. I was free to film and take photos though I was being discreet as people do not always like being filmed in public
We were going to go south from Shahid Haqqani Metro station south on the red line to Teleghani Station. We would pass thru two interchange stations so we decided to get off and explore one
The Metro also extends to both the domestic and international airports on separate lines
There wasnt really that much unique Persian architecture. Also women can travel in mixed carriages and do not need a male escort.
It was clean and modern in its design. This is not the image we have of a country under 45 years of sanctions that infrastructure will be old and dated as in Cuba
There were more Metros in Shiraz and Isfahan we would visit. Iran also has Metros in Mashad, Tabriz, and under construction in Qom. Again not the image of a country under 45 years of sanctions. Toronto is 5 years behind on opening the Eglinton line.
