Today I was doing a full day trip to Lunenburg and Mahone Bay. Unlike other early tours I didnt have to meet till 10am so had time to rest and get breakfast. However they overbooked the group so we had to get off the bus and wait half an hour for them to bring a bigger one.
It was about an hours drive to Lunenburg on the highway listening to the guides stories. German and Dutch settlers had been recruited to settle as there was still resistance from French Acadians and Native Indians.
First stop was the schoolhouse. Its timber construction does not make it to fire code so it is no longer in use for children except as offices.
The homes date back to the 1700s. A group of Norwegian sailors took shelter in WWII due to the occupation of their country and trained and went back as part of the resistance.
There was another church which was recently badly damaged by fire but restored. It rang the midday church bells. Fire is a constant threat to all the wood homes but they have a strong gravel base that has never shifted.
We then had an hours freetime by the waterfront. Many of the homes are painted in bright colours. They had a Fisheries Museum but I skipped. We then continued back to Mahone Bay.
Mahone Bay is much smaller so no tour and we had an hours freetime. There is a free museum with nice exhibits and nearby ice cream shops.
Mahone Bay is famous for its three churches but they were all locked and you cant get them all in one shot as they are spread apart or covered in trees from a distance.
