Leaving the Wood Palace hotel we were driving off road to reach the second Wood Palace. We passed thru the same villages from last night but made a turn to go in a different direction instead of heading back to Chukhloma.
The homes are not all abandoned and there are scatterings of locals still living. I suggested to Tony they could make hand crafts or local foods to sell to the tourists but he said locals are very against earning income like this and felt like it would be bowing to and serving people from Moscow.
Its a shame as it could bring some income and help keep the villages alive but this is a remnant of resentment from Soviet times. I suggested they could partner with the hotel to do village tours but again the reaction from Tony was that locals would not want to do this.
Tony saw an interesting house and stopped the car. I thought it was just to take a picture but he then said to go inside. Technically this is trespassing, and I was worried if the structure was safe or animals were hiding inside.
It reminded me of the homes in Chernobyl that had been looted and stripped bare. The floorboards seemed strong but I wasnt going to venture upstairs and certainly not into the dark cellar.
