For my stay in Oslo I was staying with my friend in Gronland close to Central Station. This was handy as accommodation in Norway is not cheap. I was surprised however that this was a vibrant ethnic neighbourhood.
Unfortunately there are articles circulating online that this is a "no go" area for locals and "the most dangerous places in Norway" due to its Muslim population. Anti immigrants are getting in a frenzy with this type of reporting though it is complete exaggeration and nothing more than hysteria and racism.
This diverse mix adds to the community bringing an international flavour and may end up one day becoming a tourist area.
For my birthday dinner I had a kebab platter at a Turkish restaurant for 179K ($25 Cad).
The local mall 'Gronland Bazaar' is hidden inside a side street where the original stores are now entrances leading inside. This is a neat trick Norway does hiding shopping malls in the local community.
