Continuing on from Shrewsbury we were now heading north to Chester. Due to the close proximity with Wales we now saw Welsh trains. There were also station signs in Welsh. Heading vertically north, flat England was on the east side, while Welsh mountains were on the west side.
We arrived in Chester by 3pm. Our hotel was right by the station which was perfect to dump our bags and not waste time carrying them to find the hotel. We could lighten our load and begin our walking tour before museums close after 4pm
To get to the old town from the station we passed thru what was the ethnic street with halal restaurants and supermarkets. This would be a place to come back for dinner once we had done our walking.
First we tried to get to Chester Cathedral but it appeared to be closed. We had actually come to the wrong door. We continued in the town centre.
These Tudor buildings had what is called 'The Rows'. There is an upper level walkway connecting all the buildings for the entire row allowing two level shopping. I'm surprised this novel idea never caught on outside Chester.
By the Town Hall on the west side we found the entrance to the Cathedral. It was impressive but I was getting a bit overwhelmed by so many Churches. We had just seen so many in Shrewsbury this morning.
It would be nice to spend more time appreciating the Cathedral had we not crammed so many churches to the point of overload.
Heading south was Chester University. At one side is Chester Castle which was closed except for guided tours. We skipped the Military Museum due to time.
Nearby was the Grosvenor Museum which had free entry and looked more interesting in google pics.
Making our way out we went south to the Bridge Gate by the river to get to the Roman areas. All of the Roman areas are outdoors and free.
I now needed a big heavy meal. The weather had been cold each day and I was fighting a cold. We picked a persian restaurant, which provided much needed warm lentil soup as a starter. Meal was 11 pounds. Their naan which was delicious I also saved one for breakfast next day
