Resolute Bay

Resolute, Canada
I had worked as ground staff for an airline since mid 1972. The company had a unique way of operating this isolated northern base - a 3 month assignment in with the first 45 days as the agent and the next 45 days as the manager. I flew north on Nov 16 1972 on a Lockheed Electra L-188 aircraft. As the aircraft motored its way north with stops in Yellowknife and Cambridge Bay, the contemplation of a place so remote, so cold, and so isolated seemed scary. The terminal building was a small structure with the competition on one end and us at the opposite end. Nordair flew twice a week to Frobisher Bay and Montreal. We had 3 flights a week to Edmonton using B737, L188 and B727 aircraft. There was also a large Hercules cargo aircraft operation based here. This division had their own pilots, maintenance people, project managers and even their own hotel aptly named the Herc Inn which is where I stayed. Upon arrival the place was totally dark and around -40C. I jumped to work while the aircraft was quickly offloaded and on loaded. It was a journey never to be forgotten.
