Antigua Guatemala, Guatemala
Our arrival in the western port village of Puerto Quetzal find a quite industrial with container ship area and a tourist market all in the same vicinity. The onshore market is bustling, the temperature seems extra hot and the vendors are making great deals. Guatemala is interesting as this is the home of some of the larger Mayan ruins including Tikal which can take a week to explore. Our tour takes us to Antigua, a village in the highlands some 120 km inland. Antigua has been declared a Monument of the Americas and has been preserved as a 17th century village with its churches, square, shops and cobble stone streets. We enjoy a local lunch of pupusas at a nice eatery that was visited by Bill Clinton. The people are up to 70% indigenous and are very friendly. We enjoy the scenery on the trip back to the ship. There are 33 volcanoes in Guatemala of which 3 are active. The most interesting is the story of the Water Volcano which the Mayans prayed to for a miracle to save them from the Spaniards. The miracle happened when a large mud flow out of the upper lake in the caldera broke destroyed some of the local countryside.
