Crowded Busy and Hot

Acapulco, Mexico
Acapulco as a great vacation spot has lost some of its glitter. This is the first port where we must tender ashore. There is a single dock where the NCL Star arrives to take its place later at noon. We have a peculiar pair of tour guides who drive small and bumpy mini vans. Our first stop takes us to the Mirador Hotel and the location of the cliff divers. Impressive and dangerous, after the show they all race to the viewing area with baskets to collect tips. We then travel across the city to a the Chapel of Peace with its huge cross but the church is closed for services. Sylvester Stallone's house is nearby. We wind or way down the hills to the San Diego Fort or the Museum of Acapulco. It seems a little contrived but does show how far back the history goes and the Spanish - Asian connections in trade and commerce. Since the church was closed, the guide takes us to an old hotel named Casa Blanca. The hotel has seen its better days but it has an excellent lookout over the fabulous bays of Acapulco. Our last stop is the Flamingo Hotel that was once owned by John Wayne. This retreat of the Hollywood stars is where the Coco Loco drink was invented. Back to the dock where a large souvenir and jewelery shops keeps us busy until it is time to board the tender to the ship. Acapulco in some ways resembled Honolulu but seemed a little less kept.
