Ephesus and Turkey

Izmir, Turkey
Our ship moves slowly up the wide Izmir channel on this humid hot early morning. Izmir is the third largest city in Turkey. It is modern and the people are friendly. Our trip today is to Ephesus an ancient Roman ruin some 125 km from Izmir. If Athens was hot; this is hotter.   The country side is covered with green fields and forests of peach, orange, olive and other fruit trees.   Our guide points out they are a different kind of Muslim, modern and are separated between church and state. Ephesus was a location that The Apostle Paul preached at and is noted for its large library building and the 30,000 seat amphitheatre. There are roman baths, water aqueducts, ancient stone bathrooms and the ruins of home foundations to be seen. We are the 3rd cruise ship and it is busy here.   Line ups are long and people are dropping in the heat. An ambulance is called for an elderly man on our bus. We watch a Roman gladiator fight then travel to a Turkish rug factory. The work is beautiful, details but meticulous. Some carpets take years to complete. We are given snacks, drinks and a glass of wine; followed by a sales pitch. . Its back to the ship where we speak with a young couple who spent the day at the Bazaar in Izmir. This sounds like a great place to start for our next trip when we are in Turkey.
