Florence, Italy
Ocean Princess arrived at dawn in Port of Livorno, Italy and we were pulled into the narrow berth by a tug. It was a busy morning here with 3 other ships bringing travelers. We set off to the Town of Pisa which is about 45 minutes away. This area was ruled by the Medici family who were both rich and powerful. The Baptistery, Church and Tower at Pisa were built from the best solid marble that could be found. The land is soft and not able to take great weights and we all know what happened. Faye tried to fix the tower.
We passed thru Tuscany which is dotted with small villages, yellow-orange homes with red tile roofs and brown shutters plus rolling hills and deep valleys . It is a post card and the movie with Diane Lane captures the incredible scenery here. One wants to stop and get a bottle of Chianti and some bruschetta and THAT became our choice for lunch.
Next stop is Florence - the heart of the Renaissance where paintings, sculptures and incredible building abound. The Duomo is a massive cathedral built from different coloured stone. The Punta Vecchio, a bridge over the Arno River, is loaded with a stores and the church of the Holy Cross is
impressive. Michelangelo's marble statue of David sits in a museum here
however 3 fakes are located at various locations for all to enjoy.
