Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia
Two days later than planned, we arrived in Borneo with our first flight aboard Air Asia, which ran smoothly. There was a storm, so when we got there it was raining, to our surprise. Just flying over Borneo, looking down from the plane, most of it is just lush rainforest. I'm not sure if a lot of it is palm oil plantations, or if it's just untouched forest, but it looked incredible from the air. It's just as I expected it to be. The airport is a bit out of Kota Kinabalu centre, we just missed a bus to town, so we took a taxi to our hostel, Lavender Lodge.

By the time we got to the hostel, it was already dark and getting late, so we just checked in, waited for the rain to stop and went to find dinner. There was a food court right opposite us, it's a seafood place. When we walked in, there were loads of tanks with live seafood; prawns, crabs, fish, lobster, crayfish, some huge crab which i've never seen before, but apparently it hadn't changed in millions of years. I hated the thought that they were all just being kept alive until people ordered them for dinner. However, as we're in Malaysia now, I thought we should give them a try. I ordered some chilli prawn dish, and John ordered a mixed seafood platter, which were really good. You'd think it would be cheap, but my prawn dish cost £7 alone, so it wasn't that cheap! At least we experience the local dishes. After dinner, I was curious about the huge crabs and was taking a picture, when the waitress took one out of the tank and gave it to John to hold up for a picture. It was a strange thing and he said it was quite heavy, I won't be picking one up any time soon!

The next day, we had a long lay in as we still haven't had many for a while. Our room doesn't have a window, so it seemed like it was the middle of the night when we woke up! We haven't planned on doing much sightseeing while here in KK, so just decided to go for a walk about the town and visit the harbour, as the South China Sea is just behind us. The weather was hot again today, but they have covered sidewalks which provide shade from the hot midday sun. We went past the harbour and you could see some small islands across the bay, we've done many island hopping visits lately, so it didn't really interest us going there. We found a large shooing mall and took refuge from the sun there and found somewhere for lunch. I haven't had a jacket potato in ages, but this place sold them, so ate one of those.

After lunch, we tried to find out about booking a bus to Sepilock, but apparently the big bus terminal is half an hour out of town. Our hostel said you can just turn up at the terminal and book a bus that goes to Sandakan, and ask to get off at Sepilock. So we'll do that tomorrow. Later that evening, it started to rain again, but we still had to venture out of the hostel. We didn't fancy the seafood thing again, so found a good western Pizza Hut and had a lovely pizza there. We got soaked walking there and back, but it was worth it for the food and the lush tropical passion fruit juice I had! We packed our stuff up ready for tomorrow, we're travelling to see the Orangutang's- can't wait!
