Birds of Inti Wara Yasi

Villa Tunari, Cochabamba, Bolivia
I'll make this a quick post. Throughout our three weeks of working for Inti Wara Yasi, we were allowed to have one day off work. Luckily, they allowed us to take the day off together and just arranged for the other volunteers to work with our animals. We had our first lay in since we'd been here, so it was great not to have to get up and work in the jungle for a day. We visited the local markets and bought some fruit and veg to cook in our accommodation and had a really good smoothie for around 50 pence. I love how cheap things are in Bolivia.

In the afternoon, we came back to the park and were invited to come and see the birds . We accepted and were allowed to walk around the bird enclosures. They mainly keep macaws here, all with different personalities. Some were friendly and let us stroke them, but others were a bit vicious if they didn't know you and tried to bite John's fingers! One of the birds loved spinning around on a wheel spoke, which was built like a swing, it looked so cute on it. Some cannot fly as their feathers have been clipped, so they are allowed to come outside of their cages and sit on a perch. Others can fly, but not much. It's good to see that they were allowed out of their cages.

We also got to meet the two toucans that they keep here, one was called Captain Jack and I can't remember what the other one was called. The girls who worked here let us go inside their cage. They cannot fly and share a large cage together. John went in first and held his finger up to it's long pointy beak and it started to try and peck his finger. Their beak isn't very strong, so they have a weak bite. It was having fun trying to peck John's finger all the same. We both loved the toucans, so they let me go inside their cage too, but I didn't dare put my finger near it's beak. One toucan was a little shy, but Captain Jack was a little more playful. We've both never seen a toucan so close, so to get inside their cage was amazing. The colours of their beak are so vivid. We couldn't stay for too long, as the girls had work to be getting on with. Although I wouldn't have wanted to work in the bird enclosure, I did find the birds quite interesting all the same.
