Pulled into dock at Bartlett Cove - Glacier Bay National Park (Bartlett Cove is an area rich in Tlingit place names and oral history. It lies within the Wooshkeetaan clan territory and Huna Tlingit oral history tells of a large village before the Little Ice Age named L’awshaa Shakee Aan or “Town on Top of the Sand Dunes” with many houses built atop a glacial moraine as its name implies.), we had a walked around Bartlett Cove Forest Loop Trail which is a stunning forest with spectacular views. Once back at the dock it was on board again to cruise to see John Hopkins Glacier we were joined on board by a National Parks Ranger "Erika" (a very informative and enthusiastic Ranger who stays with us for the day answering all our questions) on the way seeing Otters and Puffin's (Puffins are any of three small species of alcids in the bird genus Fratercula with a brightly coloured beak during the breeding season. These are pelagic seabirds that feed primarily by diving in the water), we passed Willoughby Island which was covered with Sea Lions, the bay had spectacular views of mountains with ice caps, getting closure to the Glacier spotted Mountain Goats grazing on mountain side, finally at John Hopkins Glacier (this is one of Alaska's most picturesque glaciers, it's 12 miles long, and has been confirmed to be one of few glaciers that is still advancing rather than shrinking.
), while there watch seals on icebergs and spotted two Bald Eagles perched on a iceberg, we were waiting to see part of the glacier break (no such luck this time). Moving onto another Glacier where William spotted brown bears on shore, we arrived at Reid Glacier which also sits inside Glacier Bay National Park (this glacier is a remnant of the massive glaciers that formed during the last ice age. It is bounded on the north by Yokum Ridge which also defines the southern side of Sandy Glacier, and by a ridge on the south bounding the north side of Zigzag Glacier), this is a smaller Glacier than most but still amazing to see. We headed back to drop "Ranger Erika" back at Bartlett Cove passing Gloomy Knob.
After such an eventful and very fulfilling day Debs decided to turn in after tea. Debs woke up during the night to an amazing view from our cabin of the moon glistening on the water as we glided to our next destination.
