Waking up this morning anchored in beautiful Bailey Bay, the reflections in the calm water was breathtaking. Deb off to stretch class again
Today we prepared for a 11km all day hike along Shelokum Trail and in reaching the end of trail were to be hot springs. The kitchen had prepared our lunch packs (turkey wraps, cookies, nut bar & banana). We were told the trail was fairly muddy and more rain was predicted, so we decided to wear our gumboots and rain gear (good choice in the end). Boarded the skiff, second team to be dropped off on the beach and commence off on the trail, moderate climb to start with stopping occasionally to for Jess (guide) to talk about the different terrains and vegetation, the trail became stepper and more challenging, stepping over fallen trees and crossing over small waterfalls, after 1.5hrs reached a magnificent waterfall this is where the rain started light at first, we continued our trek along the shores of Lake Shelokum towards the top where hot springs were waiting for us. The rain got heavier, we were walking through pools of water & mud, over and under rocks - wow this was a trek.
The rain continued to get heavier so we decided to stop for lunch under a rock giving us some coverage from the rain. Jess indicated we would have to pick the pace up or we will not make the hot springs, we all decided to continue with trail becoming more challenging and the rain still heavy which slowed our pace, Jess decided to stop where we were and turn back; (found out later from the first team we did not miss much) with the rain continuing to pour the trail became more slippery and treacherous In reaching the small waterfall we crossed earlier came across the third team who were only doing half the trail as far as the waterfall and then the first team heading back. The small waterfall we crossed earlier was only about ankle deep but with all the rain was now strongly cascading down and up to our knees, the guides and some of stronger passengers made a chain to assist people to cross the waterfall. Finally we could see the beach yeah!!, onto the skiff and a hose down by crew to get all the mud off us before boarding the ship, and into a hot shower before relaxing over cocktail hour.
After dinner we made our way back to the lounge for that nights film and talk by Kayla on dog sledding.
