We cruised into Ketchikan about 7.45am.
After breakfast meet up with Joe Williams (facebook page "Where the Eagle Walks"), "Where the Eagle Walks" is Ketchikan’s premier walking tour, and its appeal is the rare access you get to a true downtown character – guide and former Ketchikan Borough Mayor Joe Williams.
Our first stop was at The Rock Monument - The Rock tells the story of how Alaska's First City came to be. Six of the seven figures on the sculpture represents a prominent archetype in the city's history—a fisherman, a minor, a logger, a bush pilot, a frontierswoman, a Native drummer. The seventh represents an actual historical figure—Chief Johnson, a Tlingit who stands on top of The Rock, symbolizing the fact that his people were the first to make their home in SE Alaska, next stop Thunder Wings a large wooden Eagle - The "Thunder Wings" statue represents the naming of Ketchikan by the Tlingits, across from The Eagle is Ketchikan Tunnel - it is said to be the only tunnel in the world that can be driven through, around and over, next we proceed to Totem Poles - Raven Stealing the Sun - The totem tells of Raven who desired the sun, moon, and stars owned by a powerful chief.
Raven changed form, appearing as the Chief's grandson, and cried until his grandfather gave him the boxes containing the heavenly bodies. Then Raven, with his trickery, opened the boxes, bringing stars, moon and sun to the Earth, we continued onto the famous Creek Street - The History of Creek Street can be summed up by fishermen, bootleggers, and prostitutes. Creek Street is known as Ketchikan’s old red-light district. In the mid 1920’s there were over 20 bawdy houses on Creek Street alone! now the antique boardwalk on wooden pilings over Ketchikan Creek is home to restaurants, unique curio shops, the ‘Dolly’s House Museum’, our tour ended at Creek Street about 10.30am. We both decided to cancel our 1.30pm hike tour and hang around Ketchikan, our first stop Soho Coho owned by Alaskan artist Ray Troll he’s widely recognized for his obsessively detailed scientifically accurate artwork along with his offbeat, quirky sense of humour. Continued wandering along Creek Street through quirky shops and watching seals play in Ketchikan Creek.
We watched people catching salmon off the bridge before heading to Fat Stan's Sports Bar & Pizzeria for a pizza and couple of pitchers of beer and a chat with our girls Jayde and Zarli (through Messenger).
Taking a stroll down the other end of town we looked onto the harbour to see S.S. Legacy looking very small moored up next to the large Disney Cruise Ship. Walked via Water St along the harbour and passed the tunnel to see 3 more large cruise ships, no wonder there were so many people around.
Cruised out of Ketchikan around 5.30pm heading through Canadian waters where we are unable to stop for two days. Tonight for tea was rolled sirloin and/or salmon with pearl couscous and pomegranate and broccolini and William and I shared tart for dessert.
Captain informed we would be going in Dixon Entrance Waters with possible 9ft swells and to ensure all items were taken down or packed away should only last about 2hours. William went to hear Dave discuss Astrology. Going to bed being rocked to sleep by 6ft swells and we were lucky being on level 1 of ship didn't feel too much of the motion that level 3 felt. Also needed to put our clocks forward an hour as now in Pacific Ocean.
