Cabuya and Cabo Blanco adventures

Montezuma, Province of Puntarenas, Costa Rica

Had a full day planned out . Got up early and took our laundry in since clean clothes seem
to pack better than dirty ones and we will be leaving in a couple of days. Got them turned
in and down to the bus stop in time to get front row seats on the bus. Checked things out
as we rode along.

It looks like Rio Lajas has more water than usual and might be more difficult to walk up
than in the past. Did not see bookstore as we drove through town so will have to check on
our way out.

Got to the entrance to Cabo Blanco and this was the end of the bus ride. If you ride the
bus all the way to the entrance road, it is 1000 colones and if you get off in town it is
800 colones. Same applies for the ride back to Montezuma.

Got off with the rest of people heading into the park and took our time walking down the
road to the actual entrance to park where you pay your admission fee. For the foreigner it
is $12 each but they do accept credit cards, in fact encourage it! Hope all the money is
going to a good cause in the park . They have volunteers working there to answer your
questions, etc. We had a very enthusiastic young man studying at the University in San Jose
in computer science. He was very interested in what we were looking for, the birds, and
just travel in general. Had a nice visit with him as we had a snack before setting off on
our walk,

There are three main trails, Sendero Arboretum, 1 km., Sendero Danes and return 1 km. on
each portion, and the Sendero Sueco or Swedish Trail, 3 km. and difficult. We have done all
three of the suggested trails and the Swedish Trail is quite a haul to get out to the end
and back in time to catch the last bus back to Montezuma. You are walking through dense
foliage on a up and down trail and there is NO breeze to feel at all! We have enjoyed the
Arboretum Trail and can take as long as we desire. There are fewer people on this trail and
so can watch birds and other creatures at your leisure.

Had not gone down the trail very far when we saw a male and female barred Antshrike . The
male has a distinctive black and white pattern and the female of course is much less
colorful.   A little further down the trail we saw a yellow throated Euphonia which we have
not seen in this area before. Also got to see the "owl" butterfly which was so well hidden
against the side of the tree. A zebra striped butterfly came and landed on Robert's hand.
Must have been enjoying the saltiness because did not seem to want to leave!

From there we walked in the noon day heat down the road the road to the bookstore that was
now open. She no longer sells stamps and delivers your postcards or takes used books but
does have postcards and books for sale. Visited with her for a while and then on to our
friends place.

They have a very open style house they are renting that opens to the water and if you walk
on down to the water, a nice view back to cemetary island. Had lunch with them and caught
up on news from here and there and then caught the bus back to Montezuma.

We were waiting for the bus by a sign advertising pizza and so decided to order a pizza when
we got back to Montezuma and have it with a salad when we got cleaned up.   Probably would
have been better hot but still did enjoy with salad and wine.
